If Bevo would have Shish Kabob’d a couple media members in his pursuit of UGA, I think live mascots would have been on the way out. Folks have been weird about Bevo ever since.

Back in the early '90s when I was in school, tu would load him up on alfalfa so he'd shite all over the Kyle turf.

Kentucky has a live wildcat but only brought it to games in decades. The crowd noise obviously made it extremely skittish and it didn't handle it well at all. No idea when that was discontinued, but we have an honorary live wildcat mascot in a wildlife sanctuary, I believe in Frankfort.
