20-team Big Ten in 2030, Maryland AD says; Notre Dame will not budge on independence

Unclear if Maryland's AD is just speculating, but quite a frank statement from a sitting B1G AD.

then they should have much stricter requirements to make the playoffs, but it will never happen. they want them in.

I think their hand will be forced if the B1G does in fact go to 20 ... because that will almost surely mean the SEC will also be going to 18 or 20. Not going to be many meaningful games left for Notre Dame to schedule, and that will eventually erode their value relative to the monster two conferences.

The Big expanding does not necessitate a corresponding move by the SEC. Let the Big bloat itself. The SEC should buck the trend and contract.

Ignored by the article is the biggest factor in ALL conference expansion -

The B10 media contract expires in the 2029-2030 season.

The only reason they’d expand would be a guarantee of increased $$$.

The SEC is already (somehow) way behind the B10. We are about to cash in our only chip of going to 9 games, which means unless we want to fall even further behind the SEC will expand to keep pace.

It is the lead The story completely misses.

This. What teams are out there that would result in ESPN paying more pro rata than they are right now? Even Texas and OU couldn't get ESPN to pay more pro rata. The SEC will get a big bump in revenue just from negotiating the next TV contract if we don't stupidly give ESPN an extension before bidding it out, as we did the last time.

Adding to an already top heavy, pitiful conference.

Disagree. This a zero-sum game. There are still a few schools that increase the payout per school long-term. If the SEC sits idly by and lets the B1G grab FSU, UNC, or probably ND, despite what they say, that conference has leverage over the smaller SEC. It'll continue to make more money and drive bigger contracts. Eventually, it'll convince some school like Texas to come on up and make more money. Ironically, for those SEC purists out there, the best option is to expand one more time and solidify the conference as level with, or even ahead of, the B1G.

What you are suggesting is literally what the Pac-10 did - and it cost them everything. They could have raided the Big 12 and taken its six best schools. But those folks thought they were too good for truck stop schools, and that it would dilute the conference. How did that work out for them?

And yes, we all want smaller regional conferences and traditional rivals. Repeating that over and over on message boards ain't gonna make it happen. The old SEC is as dead as Mizzou's old Big Eight. Might as well continue to be the biggest dog on the lot in the new landscape.

Can Mizzou be one of them?

There is no "pace" for the number of teams that need concern us.

Nobody is claiming that. We're talking about taking the top few brands from the ACC and leaving the rest for dead. It also sucks, but it's going to happen.

More or less, the B1G and SEC bout to do this to the ACC:

Yes there is, the pace at which we make $ in comparison to the B10.

You think southern kids are loyal to southern states?

The B10 currently makes $80 and we make $68. They are about to explode further ahead in 2030.

What do you mean ND wont have any meaningful games have you not see that they play such juggernauts as Navy, Army, Air Force, Rutgers, Syracuse, Wake Forest

Nope. We will have to simply hope that Texas and OU pay off in the long term, because they don’t in the short term. But, whatever you want to say about the sips and Sooners, there isn’t a brand left out there that moves the needle. Adding more teams out of fear of them joining the Big Ten would be a reactionary move no more well thought out than the Big Ten going to 18 in a panic reaction to Texas and OU joining the SEC.

...within 3 to 4 years.
