So if you go after the top coach at 11 mil, like some Kentucky fans said, is this a half of a good hire?

I’m curious why they rushed to make a hire on a Thursday night the night after their old coach was introduced

5.5 for 5 years.

Their AD needs to be ran out of town before he can sign the papers.

Barnhart knows absolutely nothing about evaluating a coach’s previous stats and records. It’s why he had a tiny role in the hiring of Cal when he was basically forced to let other administrators take over the hiring responsibilities.

Paying him 5.5 million is the part that gets me. He would have taken the job for 2.5 million. Why spend 3 million more just to make yourself feel better about it. Arkansas has done the same thing with football hires for 10 years now. You don’t want to replicate the Arkansas football model.

Do the math

Cal @ 9.5
-
Pope @ 5.5

= 4 million per year in extra NIL $$$$

Pay him 2.5 million and have 7 million more per year in NIL. Overpaying just so you don’t look like you made a cheap hire is the dumbest thing you see consistently in college athletics.

That salary isn't that high considering. The rant has some weird takes.

To the checkers players, the point is valid.

UK donors are playing the 3-D chess game

Overpaying Pope for a few years is a slow play for the next coach that will be the one they want. Just look at Billy Clyde hire, got the fans expectations lower so easier to hire Cal next. Few extra million a year and the top tier keep you on the radar.

You’re either a bad troll or you’re going through the worst case of denial I’ve ever seen

Neither, just really old and seen this history before. I suggest my thread about UK coaching hires and Indian dieities if you want the history lesson.

The longer you live the more often you get to see the same dog & pony show

Kind of wild for me to think that some basketball coaches are paid more than football coaches
