Bama of course would look at overall because they signed a top 5 hs class. but suck in the portal.
but other schools like OM who focus more on portal couldnt care less about overall.
additionally...the portal class is going to directly impact next season. Your star studded hs class wont see the field for a 2-3 years...with the exception of 1-2 of them.

The overall contains both HS and portal commits. It's just a better metric.
If I just cared about pretending Alabama did better than the reality, I'd have looked at only HS last year instead of overall.
LSU had the #1 "portal class" last year, went 7-6.
