I think a combination of all three. It was clear to see that man coverage wasn’t working, but know adjustment was made because our DBs weren’t ready for a zone scheme. All of that gives a QB confidence, and Mississippi State’s QB was in a zone. Literally everyone was beating their man 1-on-1.

Do you think if LSU's defense had adopted a different scheme, could you have beaten Mississippi State?

Or was your defense just too depleted from the draft and players opting out to make a difference regardless?

Or was MSU's QB just so on point that particular day, none of it mattered and you were only going to win by hitting almost 50 points on offense?

Yes... to all.

LSU was planning to play solid man with "DBU" coverage. Meaning, Stingley at 1 CB, etc etc. Probably expected Miss State to maybe push 300 yds, tons of short things, force mistakes and eventually outscore them by 10 or so. Just my guess.

What apparently happened was,
1 Stingley's LATE (Friday night) illness threw the wisdom of the gameplan in the garbage, as you didn't have an experienced stud CB as the top cover guy. Too late to scrap the gameplan, so you moved everyone up a slot, and guys weren't ready for their new assignments, especially the guy who would otherwise not play. Those who did play, still learning the scheme (Ricks learning college speed too; and the transfer learning LSU on the fly), limited options to change... those playing weren't really ready for plan A, they definitely would be in trouble if you went to plan B. They probably didn't practice much zone, and nobody would have practiced zone taking Stingley's spot so you'd be worrying about busts in that too. With man, at least you can say "go cover that guy" and have a chance.

Leach and Costello was ahead of what we expected, and combined with the defensive issues it made for a perfect storm. Probably would have been tighter than we expected, maybe he'd have gone over 400 yds still. Judgement call and error on the coach's part.

As for outscoring them in a shootout... Brennan will be fine but he needs to settle in and get comfortable. He's gotten blasted by some rantards, but given the circumstances I thought he did fine. I think rallying to tie at 34, all things considered, was a good sign. He just didn't have enough to make another run in his first game.

The game ended up SO much of an outlier, that I almost disregard it. Ain't too much you can do on offense to keep up with a 600 yd passer.

Missing Stingley made a huge difference. I think if we played dime the entire second half would have helped.

That is a HORRIBLY young secondary, especially in SEC play. Considering LSU will face at least three more really strong passing attacks (Ole Miss, Alabama and Florida) that's going to be rough sledding.

They are super young, but losing Stingly hours before the game unexpectedly threw everything off. One corner who plays the slot moved outside and struggled. One was only on campus a few weeks and another wasn’t suppose to play but had to out of necessity.

I think our top 3 corners collectively will be the best in the sec by the end of the year. So we will see.

This excuse is total bullshite. Injuries happen in game and good teams and coaches adjust. Bad teams and coaches don't.

Stop making excuses and accept reality.

Look at the hypocrisy there. When LSU bitch slapped your team all we heard was the excuse of injuries.

Stingley plays and LSU is 2-0 and MS. State is 0-2 and wondering why they hired Leach.

Adjustments should have been "tried" in the second half, but kinda hard to explain zone Defense on a white board to your DB'S during the game.

And you weren't having it then, were you?

And if a 5 point win is a bitch slapping, what is a 29-0 loss?

If we run zone we win. I was saying during the game. That being said we did lose a lot of players and we will be average this year

I like Our chances better with Stingley than just running zone.

Also Leach can’t ever be tooo good

My biggest gripe was punting down 3 late. We weren’t stopping them. So either pick up 4 yards or go ahead and go down 10 with more time on the clock.

On he completed 58% of his passes he wasn’t on. If Stingley played, LSU would’ve won.

Yep, this is like being down 2 and trying a 55 yd field goal, when your kicker has been missing 35 yds kicks all game.

Your QB has around 300 yds and your backs have run decently. You have a chance to convert and keep up, or give the ball up to a team that's been moving the ball at will. At this point, you give Brennan a chance to find Marshall or Gilbert, or use them both as decoys and hit the back.
