quote:mike 5 was cool. for some reason, he got excited when the costumed mike came close to the trailer. so when it was the traditional time for him to roar, the cheerleaders would loosely surround the cage so that cmike was obscured. then, cmike would approach the cage and mike would roar. of course, they had a microphone at the cage so you could hear the roar through the pa. it was cool.
roared in the stadium pre game
of course in ancient times, they would poke mike with a stick to get him to roar.

quote:why do i remember a story about some guy on the top row of tiger stadium claiming to snipe mike with a rifle. he only wanted to talk to jose vargas. i think jose even brought some of his chips to the talkdown. or did i dream that?
When I was a student in the 80s some guy managed to get in between the inner and outer fence of Mike's cage and claimed he had a bomb. After he was apprehended, the paper sack he was holding turned out to contain a sandwich.

quote:i'm with you. the fireworks do nothing for me. mike letting out a roar over the pa is amazing and blood curdling
he chooses fricking kiddie fire works over the long standing tradition of mike being in the stadium

He is giventhe chance. He doesn't get in the cage unless he wants to.
He used to get in more often. He has become more solitary as he gets older.
personally i think we coudl give him a bigger travel cage. IDK why we jsut keep that small trailer (probably entrance reasons)

Haha thanks for sharing
I was pretty young when Mike V was the mascot and I knew they couldn't agitate or poke him in the mid 90's so I didn't know if it was a childhood memory blown out of proportion or what, but that's pretty interesting

One story, that supposedly comes from the Vet staff, is that during one of his first games in the cage, some a-hole set off a bunch of fireworks right next to him. Ever since then he gets anxious at the sight of the cage
They must be talking about the cannon that LSU's ROTC used to fire before games. Last couple of times that I've visited Tiger Stadium, they didn't fire the cannon during pre-game. I'm guessing that they stopped firing it permanently.

That sounds badass. Do they try to lure him into the trailer with food?
Im not kidding when I say back in the day when mike got pissed at whoever it was sometimes it was a player from the other team other times it was a mascot or what not, but it was a chilling roar. I mean make the hair stand up on your neck ...so glad that Meffer is in a cage roar.

quote:Incorrect. Mike is a hybrid Siberian-Bengal mix. He's not too big for the stadium trailer, he just doesn't like going into it and his handlers haven't successfully found a way to coax him into it on game day.........
He's a Siberian tiger which are bigger than Bengal tigers. His cage is big enough to be comfortable for a Bengal tiger which we normally have but not a Siberian tiger.

Good for who all are in charge of making the actual decision.
It's a much better statement for an institute of higher learning to not force or coerce the tiger to go to the stadium atmosphere if it bothers him.
Little worse than seeing "mascots" which look miserable in the noise and crowds.

Was at the Bama/LSU game this past fall. Watched Mike turn his butt to the fence and spray a couple of Bama fans...wish I had video going!
That being said, maybe that is a consideration when deciding to "make" him get in the trailer....I can see the uproar if some BR socialite and her kids get a shot of "tiger juice"!

Mike is a pussy. Perfect representation of LSU
Say it to his face big man

The days of seeing Mike jammed into a cage paraded around dealing with screaming fans are over! It is sad because it was one of my most favorite parts of the game day experience but hey, it is the society that we live in now.

But if it caused the animal trauma, stopping was the right thing to do.
