If the offense picks up, the defensive statistics will suffer, for no other reason than Miles is known to avoid kicking a man when he's down. Chavis's defenses the last two years were adequate, but not dominant... That was an illusion created in an effort to keep opponents off the field.
As bad as our offense was, our strategy was to keep them off the board by keeping them on the bench. There were games where teams combined for 2-3 drives in a quarter of play.
If our offense is terrible again, you'll see that approach again. If our offense picks it up, you'll see the defense be asked to spend more possessions on the field.

2011 level nastiness without Mathieu. I don't think anyone could fill the turnover machine role but overall the defense could end up better balanced than the 2011 defense.
We'll finally generate a pass rush with just four lineman and with the 4-3 under/3-4 under looks the defense will look nothing like what Chavis had. LSU will lead the SEC in sack totals and Davon Godchaux will lead the SEC in TFL.
Also, Kevin Steele gets more respect from his players than Chavis ever did. Steele actually communicates with his players and works with all position groups. Chief hid in a corner with his linebackers and chewed everyone else out. It's great to now have a real DC at LSU.
ETA: BeBe's guys gonna wreck shite.

Since, with the exception of a few, everyone on here is being retarded with stupid responses and depressing comments, I'll answer with actual helpful information for your question:
DL: We return our 3 deep from DT last year, so we should be just as good if not better. I would be a lot more excited about our DTs if it weren't for Travonte Valentine being suspended indefinitely. If he is able to play, every word is that he is an absolute monster.. At DE we lost our 2 starters from last year that were both good against the run, but extremely disappointing against the pass. It's a miracle our secondary was as good as they were with virtually no pass rush. This year Bowers and Clark will likely start, and I expect them to do much better rushing the passer. We also have some solid pass rushers in the rotation behind those first 2 guys. Overall I think our DL will be about as good as they were in the past, with maybe a little less ability to stop runs on the edge but more pass rush.
LB: Beckwith might be the best MLB in the SEC, he is an athletic freak. The other 2 spots we will fill witg returning starter Louis, and Sr Deion Jones. They should be just as good as they were last year IMO. We lose Kwon Alexander, who was great for us but everyone should be better and Jones is a vet. Also have some great depth at this postion.
DB: DBU will be DBU. We very well might have 4 future 1st round draft pics on this team in Mills, Adams, White, and Toliver. We will be just as good, if not better than we were last year. Interested to see who wins the battle opposite of White between Paris and Toliver, but either way I think they will be fine. Plus we return Dwayne Thomas from injury who was a great nickleback for us.
Overall we will be just as good if not better than last year talent wise. We may take a small step back against the run, but I think we will be absolutely dominant against the pass, especially if we develop a pass rush... The big question obviously is how will the DC transition work. I don't think it will be hard for us to make a smooth transition. The talent is all there, it's just a matter of making it simple for the players and being more aggressive than Chavis was. If we can do this, it will be a top 5 defense in the country. If we finish anywhere outside the top 30, I think Steele would deserve to be canned. That's just how talented and deep we are across the board. Really the only weakness I could see us having are defending off tackle running games.

still very talented and should have much more pressure on the QB given Steele's preference and Coach O's teaching style

I'm not worried, talent makes plays.
Take a look, statistically Chavis' defenses were always better here than his tenure at Tennessee. He fielded defenses ranked >50 numerous times at Tennessee. There were many people at LSU who didn't want Miles hiring him
Steele will be fine

I've heard that Clifton Garrett has really been impressing and if the OLB play isn't up to par, and if the staff thinks he has the lateral speed to handle it, we could see Garrett see some time on the field in that position.

After the Dec. 30th bowl loss, LSU finished their solid season with the defense ranked #9.
A testament to the talent LSU has that they're able to be that good in spite of Chavis The players have much more respect for Steele than Chavis, which is understandable given Chavis' behavior
Good luck next season Aggies

Garrett absolutely has the lateral speed. Dude is like a freaking torpedo.

I think they'll be great. Steele is obviously very well-respected by the players. And that really counts for a lot when it comes to game planning, adjustments, etc.
Arkansas players really respected Johnelle as well, and that turned out pretty well for us.

Is see our total defense being lower but our sacks and tfls will rise back to the top of the sec. As much shite as Ed Orgeron gets, he does 2 thi2mgs at an elite level, recruit and coach dline.

DL: Better because young talent has matured a little
LB: The same, Debo replaces Kwon and we don't miss a beat
DB: We need a second CB to step up but if that happens we'll be one of the league's best secondaries
In short, the 2015 has a chance to be better than 2014.
