Who is he? Seems an odd hire for a program as big as them.

A Mississippi native who played his college ball at Louisville, Payne won a national championship with the Cardinals in 1986 before being selected in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft.

He is known as one of the elite recruiters in college basketball.

Payne started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Oregon before spending a decade as an assistant coach under John Calipari at Kentucky. He consistently helped land elite recruiting classes, with Kentucky finishing with the No. 1 recruiting class in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2020. Payne also developed a reputation as someone who helped improve a number of post players during his time in Lexington.

Payne spent the last two seasons as an assistant with the New York Knicks.

Great hire for Louisville. It's totally disgusting because I like Kenny Payne and I'd much rather hate the Louisville coach. As for the the person asking who is he? He's a former Louisville basketball player, he's currently with the Knicks and before that he was Cals top assistant at Kentucky.

Well I'm glad they left Muss alone. Doubt he would go there but I dont want to sweat any.

Musselman and Oats were never going to take the Louiville job.

Look for Mike Brey or Kevin Willard to take the Maryland job as soon as their respective teams are bounced from the NCAA tournament.

Missouri is also looking at Willard.

Everything else is quite as of now.

A former player for them. The Kentucky connection is funny. Should make make for awkward handshakes. I would had went hard after Musselman but judging by the replies in this thread, he was a good hire.

Yep scheyer was named immediately. As for Oats , there are too many variables in bama's favor and as long as he builds on the success so far .. .meaning i dont worry about losing him. Greg Byrne has proven to be if not the best AD in the country , at least to be on the short list. Oats has rec.ruited better than his last couple of predecessors and a new arena is on the way

Were Pearl, Oats, and Muss actual candidates, or was it just wishful thinking from rival fanbases on here to get them out of the league?

I would’ve been shocked if any of them had left their current job.

He was Cal's top assistant for his whole time at UK until last year. Great recruiter and good guy all around. This is his first head coaching job so it will be interesting to see how quick he can turn UL around and also how patient UL will be with him. He'll recruit better than Pitino and Mack, but the Xs and Os still remains to be seen

He seems like a great fit for the program but, boy howdy, that's a heck of a place to jump into your first head coaching gig.
