Lou Holtz ranks his Top 16....and I can't much argue with his ranking, either

Any of the top 9 teams on his list -- ANY -- could viably go on to win the national title. There are 4 more teams from 10-16 I could see possibly winning it, too. I've never seen such an enormous level playing field among the top teams as this year.

ETA: By the way, here's Kirk Herbstreit's Top 6 (top 4 plus first 2 out)

1. Washington
2. Georgia
3. Florida State
4. Texas
5. Michigan
6. Ohio State

Fla St should be ahead of Ohio State. They have played a way stronger schedule. LSU should be ahead of Notre Dame

Florida State is not good and you got embarrassed. Be happy you’re ranked

Why are we still pretending Georgia and Michigan are top 4 teams? This isn't last year.

Washington and Penn State both look like they could be the real deal. Fun season ahead.

Penix and that offense are just so frustratingly efficient.

Only 3 teams on this list have a good win right now; Texas, FSU and OSU. So I would have those 3 in the top 3 spots probably in that order, then have UGA/PSU/Washington/Michigan at 4-7 in that order

Why are you pretending they aren't?

If the playoff rankings came out after week 4 I think the ceiling for both UGA/Michigan is 4. Solely based on schedules.

It isn't based on how good a team is right now, because we still don't know. Hell ND, Bama and LSU could all lose next week then all the big wins don't matter nearly as much

Open for debate how the teams would fare, but as of now Notre Dame played more respectably in their loss.

That's a no-doubter. Clemson AND LSU are a 1-2 punch tougher than anyone else in the country after 4 games.

Why are we pretending Texas is in the top 4? This isn't the past 15 years.

If Lou ranked it like it was last year, would Texas be in the top 20?

UGA has looked the part less than about 6 teams. Washington, Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, Texas...all look like more complete teams at the moment. The trouble for all of them is UGA plays almost no one, will only get healthier and will only get better as the season progresses.

If you're doing a "power ranking" type rankings setup, I don't see how you can have Texas lower than 1. Its not just that they beat Bama, who might still be a contender or may just be a flawed but really good team, its the way they did it.

Washington should be up there close though. That offense will put points up on anyone. Their top 3 receivers would be the number 1 or 2 option at every SEC school.

A lot of this is based on the fact that almost everyone has gotten off to a shaky start or has a huge glaring flaw.

We got blown tf out by FSU.

ND barely lost to OSU.

You honestly believe USC could win a national championship with virtually zero defense? I am obviously biased as an Oklahoma fan for asking this question, but I am genuinely curious as to why you think so and anyone else who might believe the same.

The LSU/FSU game to me this year was similar in ways to the OSU/Michigan game last year. LSU and OSU dominated statswise the first half and just couldn't finish drives. Both teams could have been up 17 at the half in those games, and the game is somewhat over. OSU fell over on defense keeping Michigan in the game and FSU had a couple of circus grabs for huge gains

Then in the second half both games snowballed out of control.

Penix is going to shred them when they play in November. Also, could see Shedur get back on track this week against them (although they should beat CU easily)
