quote:I mean yeah. Not because Starkville is some shite hole or that y’all couldn’t pay him. He had been at UVA and built that program from the ground up for 22 years, won the only baseball national title for the ACC since the 50’s and was beloved by the fans.
Ole Miss fans told me he would never even think about moving to Starkville
Their AD being so wildly incompetent that she would run off a legendary coach after 22 seasons there isn’t something you would expect to happen.

I think most people (OM fans included) are just surprised he's leaving UVA in general
It’s been talked about at length that UVA isn’t giving him the resources he wants. State can do that in baseball.

Good hire by State. Has to suck to be a Virginia fan. In 2 years you lose a top 5 basketball coach and a top 5 baseball coach and the football program is garbage.
has to be 100% related to NIL and UVA boosters not giving a frick
Miss St is a good job but to leave a team you’ve coached for 22 years is a big move

Have you been to BR lately. It’s a war zone. Good luck my friend.

Their AD is a woman? Everything makes sense now. I bet she showed him!

I think it’s less her running him out of town and more her hands are tied on funding baseball. UVA has a lot of other small sports they care about and have to fund. I know they have a lot of wealthy alumni but they are similar to Vandy in that they don’t really care all that much.

Makes you wonder if some of this is budget restraints thanks to the acc’s new deal. I know unc ad bubba cunningham and the board had a meeting just to discuss football investment(the main revenue generator in the acc new deal). He made the plea that unc needs to switch conferences, or lose varsity sports it holds dear in the name of a football forward acc deal. I imagine Virginia is going through the same athletic spending cuts/reallocations. The acc(well fsu and Clemson at least) is forcing heavy football investment if you want to get paid. The bottom half of the acc will mirror mid majors in all sports by the time their media deal comes up for renegotiations.

Like I said in the rumor thread, baseball is the one sport State can punch above its weight class in. This is a good hire for State and the SEC.
State is a baseball school, no doubt... I am guessing his family will stay back in VA until they are done with high school.
He better win with the what I am hearing on total staff salary and NIL promised.
If I am Jeff Lebby I am throwing tables

Sounds like their athletic director is in over her head.
From the UVA boards:
They arent giving him new lights and a state of the art video board. Thought this was funny - it would be the first "coach poach" for Virginia since 1964 when Navy hired Virginia's football coach.
From the UVA boards:
quote:
Don’t get me wrong, MSST is clearly a job upgrade
But Carla is essentially letting a hall of fame coach walk because she chose to sink money into a football team that employs Des Kitchings instead of giving BOC a video board and new lights he wanted (and the stadium needs)
Just systematic athletic department mismanagement
quote:
Carla and Jim Ryan are the Peter Principle at work. Her role of destroying
a vibrant athletic department while being saved by a nice donation to women’s basketball will go down as one of the most
UVa calls ever.

Its all rumor anyway. nobody knows anything except a small circle of people. too many people act like they have the scoop when they know absolutely zero. plus, there is always that moment where we fall flat on our faces with a huge rug pull. ive been a state fan too long to not be bracing for the latter.

wow...i think we found an athletic dept more mismanaged than our own.
but, if we pull this off, we've done a great deal to right the ship to moving back somewhere near average.
