I don't know if he's considered a big name nationally, but to anyone who has followed his career, he'd be a great hire, IMO.

Napier would be a solid hire. Nothing negative whatsoever about it.
But, I do wish they would hire Steele.

That is probably the right guy. Not sure there is anyone better available, and he has HC experience.

Napier's a good one. He's got USL near the top of the ant hill in the Sun Belt.

Seems like a guy with a really high floor and a chance to have a high ceiling too.
I'd feel pretty good about it if I was an Auburn person.

If you’re pulling someone from G5, he’s easily one of the top picks.

Napier is definitely a solid choice. AU could do much worse.
If I were an AU fan, I'd be happy with the hire.

Auburn people have to feel so much better about this guy than KS.

Pasting the article below, since it's behind a paywall.

Billy Napier, the head coach at the University of Louisiana, has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Gus Malzahn as Auburn’s head football coach, Auburn Undercover has learned. Napier interviewed with three members of Auburn’s advisory committee on Saturday. He is expected to be offered the job. There is no indication that he has made any commitment to accept an offer or where Auburn will turn should he decline. He has previously turned down offers from South Carolina and Mississippi State.
As of Sunday night, neither Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian nor Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele had been interviewed.
Interviews have been conducted by three committee members - athletics director Allen Greene, university COO Gen. Ron Burgess and trustee Quentin Riggins, a former All-SEC Auburn linebacker.
Napier, 42, took over as head coach at the Louisiana in 2018. His first team was 7-7, but the Ragin’ Cajuns were 11-3 in 2019 and 9-1 this season. He was the Arizona State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017 and the wide receivers coach at Alabama from 2013-2016. A native of Cookeille, Tenn., he played at Furman from 1999-2002.
After starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Clemson, Napier was the quarterbacks coach at South Carolina State in 2006. In 2076-2008, he coached tight ends and was the recruiting coordinator at Clemson. He was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Clemson for two years before being fired after the 2010 season.
After a year as an analyst at Alabama, Napier was the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Colorado State in 2012. He returned to Alabama in 2013 as wide receivers coach.
Napier grew up in Chatsworth, Ga., where his father was the head coach at Murray County High School. He was an All-State selection in 1997 and signed with Furman, where he led the Paladins to the 2001 Division I-AA championship game. He was a two-time All-Southern Conference selection.

Let go twice as a coordinator but successful stint taking over a solid UL program built by Hudspeth and maintaining the consistency. Seems to be able to recruit well.

Just once (when Dabo fired him at Clemson), Herm actually wanted him to stay on at Arizona State but Napier got the ULL job.
