Looking back on it, should Auburn have fired Gus Malzahn?

He was averaging 8.5 wins per season and had held his own against both Georgia and Alabama. Since he was terminated and replaced with Bryan Harsin in 2020-21, Auburn hasn't managed to finish above .500 in a season. In retrospect, should they have relieved him of his coaching duties?

Yes, ultimately he wasn’t going to get them where they wanted to be. Now the calamity afterwards wasn’t any better. But they expect national titles and firing coaches like that proves it also frick Auburn.

Yes - I had no problem with Auburn moving on from Malzahn at the time.

The problem has been how Auburn has handled hiring coaches since letting him go. Hindsight is always 20/20

Malzahn Offense/Durkin Defense doesn't look too shabby on paper.

Auburn would love to have Gus back right now. Auburn thought they had more clout, but the market told them otherwise.

I do not think they should have fired him the COVID year. Who knows what would have happened had they stuck wirh Malzhan and Nix.

No, they just shouldn’t have hired Harsin.

There was enough talent left for the new coach to come in and not implode the program.

I thought they should have kept Freeze. Auburn was in every game they played, the other team always had more talent.

He was 2-7 against Georgia, with 1 of those being in his first year which is alwasy tough adjusting to a new scheme. And he needed a literal miracle at that.

To answer the question though....that's tough. As with most guys that start out white hot but rely on a "different" kinda scheme, eventaully that gets figured out. it was very obvious taht gus was never going to win a national title. So the question for AU is...do we think we're a national title kiinda program? Or do we want to kinda be in teh same boat as UGA and Donnan/Richt where we're almost always going to be good, probably never going to be terrible, but just kinda coasting? If they were ok with that and giving bama fits sometimes, then no they should've held onto him. But if they actually DO/DID want to compete for natties, then you had to let him go. Their problem was simply making shite hires afterwards.

He won 5 conference games in a covid year. If they had waited another year they'd have been in much better shape.

But now they are stuck with John Cohen as their AD!

The National Championship loss changed Gus Malzahn for the worse. He became more tentative in his playcalling. With no will to take risks, his offenses stuttered. I think it was best for both Auburn and Malzahn to part: he needed the reset and Auburn needed to get away from one dimensionality.

Auburns all-time record (excluding ties) is wins 782 losses 474. That is a winning percentage of 62.3%. Coach Malzahn's all-time record is wins 105 losses 62. That is a winning percentage of 62.9%. At Auburn, Malzah's record was wins 68 and losses 35. That's a winning percentage of 66%.

Malzahn's all time winning percentage is slightly better than Auburns historical winning percentage and his winning percentage at Auburn was 4 percentage points better than Auburn's historical winning percentage.

Auburn F'ed up when they fired Gus.

Isn’t Gus working at FSU? How is that going? If it was going good I would have said they fired him to hastily but it doesn’t look like it.
