Chris Del Conte was buzzing as he geared up for a board meeting Thursday.
Texas’ athletic director was giddy, less than 18 hours before the department he leads was set to announce a major new initiative — one he says will change college athletics.
“This is the new wave,” Del Conte said in an exclusive interview.
In the fourth quarter of last week’s game against Florida at Royal-Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns put the new initiative to use.
Down 20-17 and facing a fourth-and-2, Texas needed a spark. So, coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff turned to their new artificial intelligence data analytics platform, Bevo Lab.
While the Longhorns ultimately failed to convert after quarterback Arch Manning lost three yards on the play, Del Conte said the moment was a pivotal embrace of the new tech.
“It’s happening,” Del Conte said. “They’re bought in.”
College football coaches using AI isn’t new. But Texas isn’t turning to traditional chatbots.
Bevo Lab, which is being officially announced Friday, functions as the athletic departments’ personal AI sports intelligence platform. Coaches, trainers, nutritionists, student-athletes and analysts will use it to improve performance on the field, court and even pool.
Sponsored by Dell Technologies Inc., Google and SHI International, it is also a living, breathing classroom for undergraduate students to shape the future of AI in sports.
“I have no doubt this will fundamentally change how college athletics programs look at data and utilize data,” Deputy Athletics Director Drew Martin said.
“Oh no doubt,” Del Conte said. “I’m fired up. I’m excited. This is earth-shattering.”

College coaches are already using AI in various ways. Streamlining workflows like any other industry, or in the case of LSU coach Lane Kiffin, reportedly asking OpenAI’s ChatGPT for legal advice. Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule is using AI agents created on Claude Code to give the Cornhuskers an edge.
Florida has launched an AI-powered Athletics initiative to investigate ways AI could reduce injury and “enhance athlete wellness.” USC hired a director of artificial intelligence and analytics for its football team this season.
But unlike chatbots or agents like Claude or ChatGPT, Bevo Lab will be used solely by UT and use UT data exclusively.
Bevo Lab’s “Bevo Lakehouse” will function as a unified data center to store sports-specific data. This data could be from game film, wearable technologies such as heart rate monitors and more.
The lab has custom AI frameworks for every team, meaning Sarkisian and women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer won’t have access to each other’s data or be asking queries in the same platform.

Did Bevo lab suggest benching Arch? If not it needs some work

Ai can make you look brilliant, or retarded. You have to know how to challenge it to get to the right answer.

when you suck so bad at coaching, you let AI call the plays. Sark is such a fraud

Well we already don't believe anything we hear, so we may as well not believe anything we see either. Living in bizarro world 2.0

"My bad, I ran the play I found on a peewee football forum. Next time I'll actually look at the playbook instead of assuming Arch Manning is an actual D1 football player."

Football is too chaotic.
AI could never stop something like a Kick Six or the Bluegrass Miracle

How?
I know the NFL has rules against using this technology in real time play calling.
Is that what Texas tried to do?

I'm most amused by Lane using it for legal advice.
My brother is a lawyer and has been on multiple cases in the last year or two where his side won purely b/c his opponent used AI to write briefs and it cited made up cases.

If this is anythign remotely close to teh "analytics" being used in CFB today, I can alreayd tell you with near certainty what it'll tell you.
If it's 4th and less than 4 and you're past your own 40- GO FOR IT

Garbage in, garbage out. If your prompt sucks and you let the AI get lazy, or even worse let it just agree with your input; your outcome with it will be awful.

AI likely would’ve said punt and there would be no Kick Six

If the AI says to bench Marcel Reed I'm all for sending Elko to the nearest all you can eat buffet and letting the AI coach at A&M

So it didn’t work and you’re celebrating that?
Loser mentality down in Austin

If with the right prompt it has bias. You have to know a lot about your subject to produce really high results.

The output said "Arch will fumble"

I know that clown Del Conte thinks he's some kind of genius, but Good Lord, we are using AI for far more complex questions than 4th down in a flipping college football game.
Claude is commonly used in what are called single-cell lineage tracing studies and then combined with metabolomic and proteomic platforms to understand disease processes and include millions of data points. And when you think about something such as the UK Biobank that has over 400K participants, EHRs and whole genome sequencing data, that's actually a pretty light lift. And then consider molecular dynamic simulations of enzyme activity based on crystallography, cryo-EM, and alpha-fold structures that take a cluster days to process....
Cm'on Man. It's flipping college football. The grad assistants can barely pass the A&P course that is a pre-req for med school to get some shite Master's degree in Kinesiology.
Del Conte sounds like a guy that was blown away after watching Moneyball 10 years after the movie hit the theaters.
