Assume the SEC wants UNC. Would it rather have UVA or VaTech as the tag along? Lets ignore Clemson and Fla St for now.

UVA is the flagship and has better academics. But VaTech has had better football, draws better attendance for its away conference games and gets better Tv ratings.

So I'm guessing VaTech may have the edge.

Why? I think we've too much expansion of the SEC already. How about we "digest" the shitty expansion teams we've already brought in?

The last 2 expansion teams haven't played a game yet in the SEC, 1 of them already thinks they run the SEC now, and now we've got people talking about the next expansion?

Yeah, but the ACC is dying right before our eyes right now. So I'm guessing the SEC will be expanding soon.

UVA easily. What does Tech provide other than Michael Vick playing there a quarter century ago?

Bigger fan base, some part of DC Baltimore media market, better football tv ratings. Which all adds up to more media and attendance revenue for everyone. Although not a lot.

Not sure which is the better add honestly.

Snooty UVA fans don't like being considered a tag along. I get it. But you need to face reality bud.

Welcome to the 21st Century. We stream now, geography is irrelevant.

Fair enough, but VaTech still gets better ratings whether you stream, use cable, or whatever. And they have a bigger football fan base.

Not more than Clemson or FSU.

Yep, that opens another can of worms though each being in a state already covered. That's why I wanted to ignore those 2. I think Fla St would be a money making add, not sure about Clemson.

And don't be naive. This is all about making more money for the existing sec teams.

UVA is stronger than VT in basketball and Baseball with recent championships. We can’t just be a football focused conference. UVA also adds extremely good academics into the mix. They are also a AAU member with high research expenditures and world class research capabilities. UVA all the way.

Although cable is clearly declining, the sec network still makes a nice chunk of change. And it can't charge more for a new team in a state already covered.

Also, streaming is moving back to cable bundle model. So we'll see what happens there.

Saying geography doesn't matter is false. It matters less than it did, but could increase in importance in future.

We could.

But even though those other sports don't matter much monetarily, I'm guessing the decision makers do assign some value to them. And I agree they should. It's just a matter of how much.

What does UVA add exactly?

They are a near Ivy with no interest in football and no national tv draw. They’re also far closer to Cal-Berkeley than UGA from a culture fit standpoint.

UVA brings nothing to the SEC from a sports perspective and would be a major issue culturally.

Va Tech is completely different culturally and has a strong football following. They’re solidly in the SEC profile academically and actually draw fans and tv media even with their current football downturn. Beyond that they are a good match for Tennessee with their fans and geography.

No one who’s ever been to Blacksburg and Charlottesville for a football game has any question or doubt as to which of those schools would be a better match for the SEC.
