I don't mind auto-bids if the field is 16, but there should not be guarantees for byes/spots. It's like basketball, your only guarantee is entry into the tournament.

If you want to be real, we should go back to pre-BCS when college football was still king. BCS/playoffs (i.e. money) are what's ruining the sport.

I wish people would stop trying to fix things that aren't broken, just for the sake of making a buck.

Oh well, that's just the world we live in.

Pfft watch Bama win it all again.

I love Bama, and the fans on here are actually pretty decent, but they lost by like 20 points to OKLAHOMA. IF they make it, they're not getting out of the first round.

Never going to happen ..... if anything , watch
for an expansion to sixteen in 6 or ten years.
Too many whiners who will never learn the more teams who
get in , the more whiners left out ...... and more importantly ,
too much money involved.

I'd put money on a #5-#8 team winning it all in the next decade

Probably an SEC team.

That's why I'm thinking top 6 cause Georgia will absolutely have a legit chance at about that spot. (or Texas if they lose this weekend)

The real problem with bowl games these days is that half the players opt out. The rosters look more like spring games than an actual competition. You might not like it but it fixes a problem.

Like what are we doing? The lower teams don't even have a chance so why are we doing this? You think Indiana, or Boise St or Alabama are going to do anything but take up space??

The problem is the teams that have a chance aren't all ranked low.

Here's my list of teams who could legitimately win a playoff.

Bama (ranked 11th)
UGA (ranked 5th)
OSU (ranked 6th)
Texas (ranked 2nd)
Clemson (ranked 17th but can win their conference)
Oregon (ranked 1st)
ND (ranked 4th)
PSU (ranked 3rd)

And that's it.

Why those teams and why in that order? Because those are the teams who've had enough success to warrant playoff inclusion who also are in the top 11 in the 247 talent composite and are above 50% in the blue chip ratio.

The new playoff requires winning 3-4 straight games against high quality opponents. Without the talent base these teams have, it's just not going to happen. They'll screw up at some point, even if they make it to the finals before doing so.

The other teams further down the list really are questionable. Most of us are aware of the "blue chip ratio"... the idea that if half your squad is 4 or 5 star players you have a shot at a title. If not you don't.

Miami and Tennessee are just below 50%.

Every other team in consideration is WELL below 50%

Why, so we can back to watching UT perpetually underachieve?

They won’t go back they will expand the playoffs. Too much money to be made.

I don’t tend to argue about future events that will work themselves out but where do you think Vegas will put Bama’s odds to win the whole thing once the bracket is set? I’m thinking they will be at or at least near the top 5 (best) odds. To speak with such certainty that they can’t beat ND of all teams seems unfounded.

This is correct. $$ runs the sport.

I like the idea of the first round playing at home. Will be an incredible atmosphere. But it would suck having to play at the "Big House" in December.

The problem with a field of 16 (and no byes) is that at least WINNING your conference championship game gives you a shot at skipping a game.

As it stands, the loser of the SEC CG is going to end up playing up to 17 games (12 regular season, conference championship, and up to 4 playoff games). The winner of a conference game at least saves a game.

Go to 16 games and there TRULY will be a "avoid the conference championship" mentality for any power conference. Hell, just forfeit the game and not show up. We're already on the path of "conference championships are worthless." Let's just doubledown.

I got a feeling Bama will win it all.
As bad as their three losses were when Milroe finds a running game you ain’t stopping him.

I think 8 was a good number. Top four conference champs and four at large teams. That preserves regional interest and the importance of winning your conference.

And if an at large team is really that much better then they prove it by going to the conference champ's home stadium and beating them in the first round
