Last 10 years, how many P5 champs have more than 2 losses?

I keep heading this argument against automatic qualifiers to playoffs for p5 champions. People argue that this would allow a 4 loss team in.

How many times in the last 10 years has a team with more than 2 losses (at the time of the championship) won their p5 championship?

I can only find one. Clemson in 2011. Then, they lost their bowl.

Bonus: plenty of the loss p5 conference winners have gone on to win January bowls.

So statistically, it’s a non issue. It won’t happen. Let’s go to p5 winners and 3 at large for playoffs and dump this committee. This committee has no rhyme or reason to its logic.

Ps- I’m not melting. I fully understand and agree that bama would not make it this year as a conference champion.

Totally fine with it if we went to 16 (and would even include best G5 champ at a minimum), but at 4 or 8 no way.

Wisconsin in 2012. Had like 5 losses and won the Big 10. They only played in the title game because PSU and OSU were on post season bans

Agreed. I've been advocating this format since the BCS days. I would give one spot to the "best" G5 conference champ too, leaving 2 at-large. I've always thought it was BS that there is essentially no way for a G5 team to play for the NC. Let the best one in or at least create some auto-qualifying mechanism - don't want to give some 2-loss, unranked, G5 team an automatic bid.

A 5 loss Wisconsin won the B1G (6 losses if you count their bowl game). Your post is absolutely fricking stupid.

So I missed one. Still statistically close to highly unlikely.

Wisconsin only won the Big 10 because of a fluke with 2 teams enduring sanctions though.

Conference champs
Highest ranked g5 team
2 at large which would be the highest ranked outside of the first two criteria.

It happened last year (2018). The PAC 12 championship was two 9-3 teams. Washington beat Utah

The only real down side to this, it gives no motivation to schedule tough nonconfrenence games...so no more Texas/LSU, AM/Clemson and such

UConn won the Big East at 8-4 in 2010.
Wisconsin won the B10 at 8-5 in 2012.

I think its actually the opposite, you could schedule tough OOC games without fear of losing those games and ruining your playoff chances.

Or it allows teamsters go out and provide entertaining OOC game knowing they can still get in with a OOC loss if they win their conference.

Look at Oregon right now? Why would they schedule another tough OOC game?

Making the playoff 8 with play AQ makes every conference championship a playoff game

Further I think Losers of conference championship games should be given some deference vs teams that sat at home.

Screw the G5. Let them create a new division and formulate their own championship system.

Move to four 16-team conferences. Four winners are in, seeded by AP. You end up with an 8-team playoff with the conf championships. Win your division and you're in. OOC games would become only useful for seeding purposes but the conference games would be bigger than ever.
