The reason Ole Miss gave him an ultimatum is because Lane and his agent brought Ole Miss into a scenario they didn't even have to be a part of. Lane's agent could have privately dealt with LSU, setup everything until after the season and Ole Miss would have never even been in the scenario to even give an ultimatum. But as Sexton always does, he gains leverage by pitting two or more universities against each other to create a bidding war.

And btw that wouldn't have worked out either. There has been a flurry of signings just now, LSU would be conspicuous in not taking someone, and then continuing to not sign as things go on. It would have been obvious they were targeting someone specificially in the playoffs.
