I interpret that as believers not neglecting to meet up with one another and sharing in afflictions. The confessing of sins to one another is to encourage, hold accountable, and to pray that their brother in Christ will turn from their sin, and to remind them that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ. "Where 2 or more are gathered in His name, He is there." kind of thing. Also, look back at the thief on the cross next to Jesus. Moments before his death he asked Jesus to simply remember him and Jesus told him that today he'd be with Him in paradise. The thief went directly to Jesus in faith, and Jesus saved him.

Listen man, just follow Jesus. Don't worry about agreeing with the pope. He'll have to give an account before God like the rest of us. The pope won't save you from hell, only Jesus has the power to do that.
