I'm not sure this is the case, but my guess is that the SEC has non-disparagement clauses in their contracts, either with the schools or with the coaches directly, which allows the SEC to punish coaches that violate the clause, whether or not Lane is correct. Similar to how coaches can be fined if they complain about officiating publicly even when the official is clearly wrong. From the SEC's perspective, it probably harms the brand when coaches are taking shots at another school that go beyond a little smack talk.
Also, every school (maybe except for Vandy) have enough skeletons that the SEC doesn't want schools constantly belittling each other publicly as this could have a negative impact on the SEC's image, schools ability to attract students, alumni donations etc.

Exactly. Lane is a snake for doing this and the perception of him changed. Before Vanity Fair most just thought of him a a funny guy via his social media. Afterwards it changed once he tried to bring race into college football.
People are tired of the race card and many people around the country now look at him as a race baiter. He really tarnished his reputation. All he had to do is say next question but he went other way and that was a bad decision.

It wasn't even that he was asked a question about it. He chose to bring it up - not the reporter.

Calling Ole Miss racist while moving to Louisiana (the most racist state in the SEC) was certainly a choice

Lane is just f**king with Rebel fans and the Ole Miss administration and he knows it.

I could not disagree more with this statement, especially in light of the Brandon Bolden video recently coming out, Jacques Doucet's video of the OM chants at the LSU game last season, and all the unrest at OM back in 2020 - let's call history and perception for what it is, even Coach O backed Lane up as that was an issue he had to deal with as OM's head coach back in the day. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter but the hypocrisy and SEC conspiracy against LSU remains true.

Yeah I can't see this blowing up in the SEC's face with all the videos coming out about Ole Miss and the negative campaign the NAACP's running against the region albeit for total bullshite reasons, maybe Sankey runs the conference like a mafia family and you can't be a Fredo I suppose (though Lane is clearly more manly and alpha than Fredo)
Anything gonna happen to Sark for the basket weaving comment though? That seems like a violation of that clause to me as well

I love how the SEC Network literally made a documentary about Ole Miss football and the school's history with racism and is now going to possibly punish someone for really just quoting someone else about that same history, God bless America
