he is without question the most selfish frick up in the sport and it’s been proven many times over at this point. he’s the most self destructive individual in the sport as well, a nepo baby who was given every opportunity but can’t get out of his own way, the big reason for his terrible career record against teams with a pulse, same win percentage as houston nutt against ranked teams. ppl notice things like that.

Lane is the only coach I've seen that's constantly trashed by other fans for leaving for what he perceived as a better job. For a comparison, people don't trash DeBoer for leaving Washington after making a natty. People don't trash Elko for lying to Duke and leaving in the middle of the night. Nobody cares that Sumrall left Tulane in a playoff run. Is it because Lane did it before with Tennessee?

One of my alma maters is D-II Valdosta State.

It’s given that if a coach wins at VSU, and most do, that they are going to leave. It’s just the reality.

When Hal Mumme left for UK, he tripled his salary and moved from 12 hour bus rides to taking a jet to games. His triples salary is chump change compared to modern contracts. VSU fans aren’t mad that he left, but we still hold a grudge over his not coming back to Valdosta with the team after a playoff loss. Instead, he jumped on a private plane to Lexington.

Chris Hatcher played at VSU. As a coach, he led us to our first national championship. When he doubled his salary to be the head coach at Georgia Southern, we celebrated his success, and he is still revered at VSU.

David Dean won two national championships. He left for a FBS OC job, but he left with class, and is still revered at VSU even though later he ended up as head coach of our biggest rival.

Kerwin Bell won a national championship, and likewise left for a FBS OC job with no hard feelings.

The next guy, a VSU alum, led us to a national championship game but got embarrassed. He resigned in the hotel lobby after the game and then jumped a plane to be announced as an FCS head coach. The hard feelings abound.

The guy after him did the same thing three years later and then and later made an arse out of himself, and created hard feelings.

Lane has a track record of leaving the wrong way. You already mentioned his bolting from UT. Then you have his getting fired at Bama. It’s understandable that he would leave to take a HC job, but he created a huge distraction forcing Saban to fire him.

It’s understandable to leave FAU for Ole Miss. He was making just under $1m at FAU, and his initial salary at Ole Miss was just under $4m.

He created an absolute circus around his status as Ole Miss’ coach, and then he followed that up with the NFL player circus.

…and yet you ask why he and his actions are perceived the way they are.
