No. I hate to say it but he's probably more like Urban Meyer. Mike Sherman was Texas A&M's version of Ron Zook. He stacked A&M to the gills with talent but he just couldn't get the job done as a coach similar to how Ron Zook left Florida with a serious amount of talent especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Don't be badmouthing Larry Coker with that comparison; he actually won something.

I laugh but it is true - his first two seasons as a head coach were two of the best years in football history at any program.
A questionable OT loss to tOSU away from back to back undefeated seasons as repeat BCS champs

Sumlin came from Houston.
Yes. I know. I was on my way to the "he was last year's version of Charlie Strong" comment and had Louisville on the mind, I guess.

What did we do to get under your skin? If anything I think we were pretty reserved after we beat Bama- there were way more LSU dickriders than Aggies.
I will sit here and troll Arky and LSU all day. Bama was nice enough to let us in their league.

Now coach smack from LSU. After that Clemson debacle; one would think coach smack would not be the best way for the corndogs to troll. What is next, going to state our QB is the next Met?

Wow. Not even close.
1. Larry Coker followed Butch Davis...who lost a combined 7 games at Miami his final 3 years there. Kevin Sumlin followed Mike Sherman, who AVERAGED over 6 losses at A&M his entire tenure.
2. Mike Sherman was 6-6 his final season. Butch Davis was 11-1.
3. Here are the key contributors recruited by Sumlin AFTER Sherman was fired:
Devante Harris - Starting CB
Derel Walker - WR
Otis Jacobs - Backup CB
Edward Pope - WR, likely starter next season
Polo Manukainu - DL, likely NT starter next season
Not to mention all of the recruits he retained including:
Trey Williams - you know him
Mike Matthews - starting C next season
Julien Obioha - starting DE this season
Alonzo Williams - started in place of the injured Obioha during the Cotton Bowl
4. Coker was Davis' offensive coordinator. Sumlin sure as hell didn't work for Sherman.
If you want to make a valid comparison, look at OU under John Blake vs. OU under Bob Stoops.

Pretty sure it came down to the final possession.
Not in Aggie history books. The way they tell it, the game was over at the end of the 1st quarter. There are a few that admit Bama was close to scoring at the end but they weren't scared. The pick on 4th down happened because they stuffed the Bama run game on the previous snaps.
Oh, and even if Bama had somehow scored JFF would have still pulled it out in the end.
Did I leave anything out?

How does having a good QB correlate to Sumlin not being a good coach?
Well, he's only had success (no conference titles in C-USA) when he has had one. He has had 2, both of which were inherited. When he had to play a QB that wasn't one of those 2, his team wasn't bowl eligible. In Conference USA.

We don't take too kindly to that. I don't know if we'll go undefeated or win the SEC or the NC in 2013, but I am 100% convinced we will beat Aggie.

You absolutely will, as will a lot of teams they do not expect. One year of JLS doesn't change 100+ years of being their poppa.

He had to play one of his QB recruits. No bowl. In C-USA. No C-USA titles even with his superstar.
Bottom line.
Bottom line.

OP: The reality of the situation is actually the opposite. The talent has been there. The coaching and attitude has not. This excludes JFF though. The last 2 coaches have underachieved.

At no point was Alabama ever ahead on 11/10. Alabama kept it close, but fell short in the end. A&M didn't win on the basis of a trick play or a special teams play. The Ags led the game from wire to wire, and that fact bothers some Bama fans.

He had to play his worst QB. That's why he was a 3rd stringer.
Bottom line.

comparing this years a&m team to the motherfricking 2001 miami hurricanes, you know one of the widely held greatest teams of all time, should be grounds for banishment.
