Kinda of a dumb hire tbh the two positions really don’t run together outside of sports being in the title.

I'm so old that I remember when he first came on the scene with The News. His writing was a cut above the rest, but it slowly (especially since the death of print) went to click-bait . . . and he didn't quite have the look/voice for anything national.

I wish him luck.

Yep. Part of the reason it sold. The surviving family made out like bandits and the company that bought it sent it down the tubes. It led to Publix coming into the market and eventually all those stores closing.

Wait, so they're gone as in not-even-a-single-store-keeping-the-name gone? That sucks. I remember them from when I was little. Also remember seeing one of the last Jitney Jungles still using the name one time. Both were part of our culture, especially Jitney. Hell, Welty wrote about her trips to Jitney Jungle.

Yep. After they sold off, it didn't take long for them to go under. Publix started killing it everywhere, and these little discount type places like Aldi popped up. And Sprouts. And of course the WalMart neighborhood markets.

The old Bruno's building near my house was bought out by a local gun store and they converted most of the space into a nice indoor range. It used to be this little shop on 31 in Vestavia/Hoover, but after they renovated the grocery store and opened up the range they've gotten huge.

The old Winn-Dixie in Vestavia was bought by WalMart and they converted it to the Neighborhood market. I like that model much better than when they build a standalone store.

Sadly, yes.

The Bruno family sold out to KKR for $1.2 billion three years after the plane crash. Through successive sales and mismanagement (and later bankruptcy and liquidation), the stores have all been closed and/or switched branding.

KKR fincanced the deal with a huge amount of debt that they later defaulted on.

The Brunos.

I ran around with one of the Bruno kids in Tuscaloosa back in the 90s. I had never before or since witnessed such wealth.

How will Birmingham news readers survive without Kevin Scarbamasky pumping out crimson propaganda?

I knew another Bruno during my time at UA (2008-13), you’d never know he had money unless you knew who he was though. Very unassuming.

I'd say you're using the term sports journalism pretty loosely if it's in the same sentence with Kevin Scarbinsky

Who takes his spot to constantly write his bullshite articles about Bama? I saw him before the national championship actually giving Bama credit. My wife said did he actually say Bama was good? It floored both of us.
I understand Phillip Marshall but never understood scarbos hate for Bama.

Yup

Dude had $20s in his penny jar like I had nickles. Had everything he needed to be a poon hound, but preferred to play with/collect Star Wars stuff.

Same memories. He wasn’t a party animal. I also remember him checking his stock portfolio. Who has a stock portfolio in college. That was a foreign concept to me.

I live in Mountain Brook now and I’m guessing he still does and We would run into each other, but haven’t yet. Also highly possible that we’ve seen each other without recognition. I look completely different.
