These kids just don't care about college football anymore.

At the least they have access to heavily discounted tickets, most aren't even motivated by that. Outside of the SEC it's far worse.

Universities don't care short of the fact that discounted/good seating is going to waste vs being sold at higher values. It's only going to get worse I'm afraid... won't matter though, the almighty dollar is still flowing in by way of media contracts.

I agree but it goes deeper. In the 90s, ticket prices made a steep climb. It essentially priced out the average family from being able to take their kids to the game every week. The audience matured and kids didn't grow up going to football games. They never formed the bond that we did.

No, I got his point. People do make decisions, and price is a factor. Say the UGA-AU game hadn’t been on TV. All of a sudden, that $140 ticket doesn’t seem so bad to a lot of people, and it becomes a hit ticket. So the TV aspect is a factor. Traffic is a factor for some. Quality of opponent is a factor to some.

Ticket price may 100% be the deciding factor for him, but it’s not the case across the board. If it was, the stadiums would be way less full for the big games that have the higher ticket prices.

Why would you give away for free something that you can sell? If they aren't selling all of the tickets then they obviously didn't price it right. They need to price it at the point where they sell them all or right at it. Meal tickets aren't free but I bet they wouldn't sell any if the the price was beyond what the market would sustain. These schools don't have economists on their payroll?

The problem is the elitists thst are willing to pay $1,500 or more for a seat to the big games ..are not necessarily your fan base.

Expand the playoff

Making regular season games less relevant would make people go to games? They definitely wouldn’t go to the playoff games in high numbers. Have you seen attendance numbers for bowls? And playoff games are often complete blowouts already. Bringing in more useless playoff games is not the answer to attendance problems. Blacking out TV games is probably part of a solution, but sponsors would go ballistic if that happened.

Never thought of that added component being the result of pricing out average fans, but it makes a lot of sense.

Free tickets, better scheduling, more favorable kickoff times. Can't blame students for not wanting to watch State U SEC school pound Directional University with a 12:00 kickoff in 100 degree September weather with a hangover.

Idk about free tickets. It was like $250 for a sports pass that got you into everything when I was in school. For me, that was like <$10 a ticket by the end of the year.

The rest of your post is spot on. I promise if A&M played Clemson, Colorado, Notre Dame in a single season (not over 6 seasons) it would crush 100k for them and not just have 85k show up and announce 97k.

The weather is right too. No team in the should should have a game start before 6 in Sept. even then I’d argue 7 would be better.

You forgot the other costs to Tenners. You have to get your women hosed down and you have to get a new pair of overalls.

Totally agree.. throw in TV, Social media, development of the NFL & NBA, multiple factors for the decline.

Sport remains strong, it’s just the game day experience that suffers. I’d like to see the math on lost seating revenue vs increased media revenue.

Smart AD’s took the advice to focus on the experience & revenue generating seating (suites) vs capacity, but many venues were already built to 90k+.

Texas’ $175mm ‘21 remodel will not increase seating capacity, but the fan experience & revenue will be the industry benchmark for future expansions. Wish they had the same vision & passion for the product on the field.

That's how it was when I was at Bama, but I think we had to pay like $4 for the season. Tickets were part of registration. You had to stand in line at Coleman during registration to pick up your tickets. One year the girl in front of me traded me her Penn State ticket for Southern Miss.

I was there 1975-79. Tickets to Birmingham games were $1.00, and games in Tuscaloosa were free. Given that there were only about 15,000 students, there were plenty of seats for everyone. They were distributed on a date that was announced. The only reason to go stand in line was if you wanted away tickets. Also, all basketball games were free...you could just go pick them up whenever.

Here’s a clue. Don’t schedule East Toodle Doo U! Improve seating. Have more amenities.

It still won’t be enough. 4K TVs will become 8K TVs. 50-60” will become 70-80” displays.
Tv forces Games to be scheduled too early or too late.

Attitudes and priorities change.

it's 100% ticket cost, plain and simple. I just said this on another board but UGA played in 4 opponents stadiums this year, all 4 of which had a face value in the triple diigts. AU was damn $140! In 10 years you could be looking at almost $200 for a face value regular season ticket. That's simply ludicrous and people are getting tired of paying it.

It's a sports problem. The number of empty seats I saw at Busch during the postseason was shocking. Even the BFIBs aren't immune to the changing times.

Uk student tickets for football are about $5. They spend that much on sodas each day.

Seriously - because there are clearly programs that have been given the proverbial NCAA hall pass to buy players with abandon, the broader football watching public has figured out it's not worth being highly invested into something that has no path to a championship.

Plenty of dim bandwagon fans of these selected programs will fail to recognize that fact... further reinforcing the underlying fact that you are the Target Market.

Meanwhile broader attendance and subsequent spending will dwindle... slowly but surely.

There are decidedly more ways for a family to enjoy their fall Saturdays today than there were in the 1900s.

Our student attendance went up by 9% even with a 4-8 record.
