A panic hire

So you seriously think there was a national title game, Saban decided to retire, Alabama interviewed other candidates, then interviewed DeBoer, negotiated a deal, and hired him….all within 4 days? If you actually think that then you are very unsmart.

DeBoer was the choice all along and had already agreed in principle even before the title game.

Why did Saban say he wasn't even sure about retiring until 5 minutes before he actually announced it then?

I would guess that he still had reservations about retiring up until the last minute. Both of those things can be true

You do realize, of course, that the agreement would have been predicated on Saban’s final decision. Right?

I’ll ask you like I asked the other guy. Do you seriously think that within 4 days a national title game was played, Saban just started considering retirement, the Alabama AD compiled a list of candidates, contacted the agents of those candidates, contacted DeBoer, interviewed DeBoer, and agreed on a contract, then hired him….all within 4 days? It doesn’t happen that way. It damn sure didn’t happen that way when LSU hired Kelly. We were all told that Riley would be hired and dominate the SEC. It definitely took Auburn more than 4 day when Harsin was hired, and more than 4 days whe Sleezy Freeze was hired.

"Saban may retire, we want you to go ahead and agree to be the head coach, in case he does."

Yeah, I seriously doubt that happened. DeBoer would have to be a moron to forego other opportunities to wait for a job that may or may not actually come open.

Sure, it doesn't take as long as many of you think.

I'm sure your AD has been holding a list of candidates for awhile now.

Kelly was announced like 48 hours after LSU played its final game.

"Hey Kalen, we know you already have a great job, but if Saban were to retire would you be interested?"

"Yes"

"Cool, let's hammer out some details"

Athletic directors are not "hammering out details" and "making agreements" with coaches for openings that may not even exist.

I'm not sure what world some of you live in.

Someone has never heard of Jimmy Sexton. You don't think that shite happens all of the time?

It doesn't.

Athletic directors and coaches are not making agreements for jobs that may not even come open.

Are they gauging interest? Sure. But they aren't making any type of formal or binding agreement.

Sounds like DeBoer listened to Washington's counter offers as well, no reason to do that if there's already an agreement.

Missouri is on a lookout for a new AD. Anyone have a list of ADS that maybe a good one for Missouri?

mizzou defense went from 100+ in '21 to mid 50's in '22 to mid 30's in '23. Think that's both scoring and total defense.

My guess is that he knew he could always stay until he announced it. Nothing was final.

If it’s DeBusts offense, why did an NFL franchise hire Grubb?

Why did Georgia hire Kirby Smart? All he did was run Saban's defense for many years.

Orgeron was fired in October so there was about a month and half before LSU had to scramble to find a cosch after Riley jilted them. LSU Administrators and fans alike were sure that Riley would be the next coach.

Mike Lombardi reported that LSU thought it had Lincoln Riley locked up as their next head coach, in fact he reports that they had a catering company all ready for an announcement on Sunday afternoon, but Lincoln “bailed on them and went to USC”.

Talk about a panic hire…..

By that token, a LOT of people were saying Lanning would be the next Bama coach.

I guess Bama got jilted too.

I have heard those rumors too, and I realize that sometimes the whole story isn't told, but this ESPN article this morning indicates it didn't happen like that, but that DeBoer and Norvell were the only candidates seriously considered.

Good article.....

You base that off of what, Mizzou having more talent than LSU

I know you hillbillies have very limited reading skills, but do you realize the projected draft picks off the Mizzou defense?

2 are projected to go in the first (Robinson and Rakestraw)
1 is projected to go in the 2/3 round (KAD)
1 is projected to go in the 4th (Carlies)
1 in projected to go 5/6 (Hopper)
