First, I am not saying Vaught wasn't great and there's no doubt that he is the greatest coach in Ole Miss history. He certainly was. I remember those teams in his heyday. (yes, I'm that old)

My reference to his 10 win seasons in Oxford was just needling the Rebel posters since the purpose of the OP's thread was to state the obvious as a jab at Kiffin. Vaught did it when there were less games per season.

Lane was only a Tennessee one year, not long enough to build it up. However he inherited a program in disarray and went 7-6 his first year, coming within a whisker of defeated Bama, he eventual national champions that year. Oh yeah, he was 34 at the time.
He went USC, went 10-2 his second season before the crippling sanctions hit. He had a depleted roster and Pat Haden didn't want fire him. But he was hardly set up for success.
He obviously helped revamp Bama's offense and was a factor in their National Championship.
He won two conference championships at FAU.
He was obviously the reason for the Rebels recent success. Anyone who denies that is beyond an idiot.

There are 4 active coaches who have won a National Title so it's not an easy task. There actually not that many active coaches who have won even a conference title at a P4 program. Again, not an easy task.
Will Kiffin? I don't know but I wouldn't bet against him at some point.

Well, let me help you out. Segregation in public universities receiving federal dollars was made illegal by the 1954 Brown vs. The Board of Education (trivia note: Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court Justice was the lead attorney).
So Vaught coached many years after segregation was made illegal. Ole Miss was integrated in 1962 by James Meredith, but he didn't play football. I think their first black football players came about 1970, a couple of years before Vaught retired. MSU's first was about the same time. I know one was Robert Bell from Meridian and I think Frank Dowsing. Robert was a big ole lineman and I'm thinking Dowsing was a cornerback or safety. Someone help me out if that is wrong.

ETA - cheated and looked it up. Gentle Ben Williams was the first black at Ole Miss. If I'm not mistaken, he had a long professional career with the Buffalo Bills.

Not going to read this thread, but I agree with the OP 1000%.

Vaught was a great coach and fine gentleman.

It is sad that standards have gone way down hill since Vaught's era.
