Occam's Razor

The simplest explantation the requires the least amount of assumptions, is the most likely

A or B?

A) Jimbo, filled with grief over his cheating wife, has bottled it all in, and actively kept it from the limelight. Therefore, during games, he's thinking about his wife screwing around, and fails to coach well.

or

B) Jimbo is a bad coach

With the kind of money Jimbo is making, he could just hire a subordinate head coach to run all operations while he stays on the ranch. Almost like a sublease. Jimbo could actually be on to something. Get a few other schools and coaches on board and he might be some sort of coaching magnate. Jimbo might be a genius.

Has A&M really gone down, though? Isn’t this kind of where they have been?

My honest question is why didn't the direction of his program at FSU, in all regards, give you pause before throwing 100 mil at him?

They just fired a coach who was winning at or above what they are used to In the toughest division in football and were going after the biggest name they could get to save face. You can't fire Sumlin and hire joe blow.

They were behind the 8 ball and gave fisher an offer he couldn't refuse.

But that's just what I take from it.....

I'd say no. Jimbo is what Jimbo is. He hasn't changed. And that is Problem One. He won't change.

Problem Two - my man - is that y'all backed the Brinks Truck up to get him. Then backed another truck up to get him players. Both truckers were legal, by the way. You did not cheat either time.

Just like Jerry Jones didn't cheat to give Dak Prescott
$40 million a year. It was a legal move. Jerry didn't cheat. It was dumb. But legal.

You paid ten million a year for Jimbo. That was the frick up. Jimbo has not changed a bit.

Being guaranteed $100Mil would make it tough for me to be motivated to be great at my job. Not many people are intrinsically motivated enough to overcome that.

Yes you’re right. Not many people are intrinsically motivated enough to overcome that. But a head football coach at a big program is. A guy like Jimbo is highly competitive and doesn’t think like you or me. I don’t think he’s not doing enough, I just think he blows at doing it.

LSU had a 10 win differential between 2019 and 2020. At worse, yall will only have a 4 win differential. You actually have to be near/at the top to have a great fall. Aggie even sucks at sucking when compared to LSU.

There's a difference between why Ed got his extension and why Jimbo got his. Jimbo's covid year was akin to the 2018 LSU team. Won 10 games, won a NY6 bowl, finished #6 in the country. That's a pretty good season. Didn't win the division or conference or make playoffs though.

LSU did not get desperate and give O an extension after that year. Because LSU expects to be able to do things like that regularly no matter who the coach is. It's not a bad season by any means but it's nothing special enough to warrant a raise or extension, at least not as a one off year when he hadn't showed he could do it repeatedly. Following that year up with the 15-0 natty however does warrant an extension. Just about any coach you can find gets extensions after natties except for Saban because he won enough of them to where Bama just wrote up a contract where his pay automatically adjusts when other coaches get raises so they don't have to keep doing it over and over. Coker got one, Chizik got one, so Coach O got one. Coach O mailing it in afterwards was unfortunate but you can't in good faith as an AD keep paying your coach $3 million a year or whatever he was making when he has the 2 seasons back to back that O did.

Fisher was already making $7.5 million a year and still had over half his contract to go. He had yet to win the division/conference or make the playoffs when according to A&M that's the goal. He was already properly compensated, nothing he had done at A&M so far warranted an extension. Same goes with Michigan State and Tucker (another Sexton client) just as an aside, I'd argue that what they did was worse but that's a different topic. Fisher already had this monster recruiting class coming in. He was not leaving that to go start over elsewhere. The A&M athletic department just got bent over by Sexton and they're just so scared for their coaches to leave like Bear Bryant did that they back the brinks truck up anytime they have any season above their typical 7-5, 8-4 type season. It burned them with Fran, it burned them with Sumlin, and now it looks like it's burning them with Fisher. Eventually you'd think they'd learn their lesson but apparently they never will.

Jimbo's effectiveness as a head coach is just either waning or wasn't there to begin with.

If he got some lower level PAC 12 and ACC schools would that qualify him as a slum lord?

Define Genius. And seriously, for anybody following this thread, I'd like to hear your definition of Genius.

Is it making moves to accumulate money ? Some will define it as that. By that definition, Jimbo is a Genius. Just ask A&M.

I've listened to and watched Jimbo. I'll say this ... he's not Genius at all, if the measure is sitting down at a checker board or card table. He gets very loud and confident, however, when he feels he controls the room. As long as he feels he controls the room.

He's very, very much Saban-like in that. I don't think Nick Saban is a "Genius" either.

As long as he stands sideways to the door as opposed to standing in front of the door when he knocks to collect the rent check. If he does that, he’s a slum lord.
