At one time the largest UGA alum association chapter outside the state of Georgia was the Jacksonville chapter. Don't know if that's the case now, but it is something to take into consideration. Jax isn't just a Gator town by any means. Probably why the game is played there, to begin with.

THis is a great point that imbeciles don't understand. Imbeciles think all UGA fans live in a 20 mile radius of Atlanta or in Athens. But all up and down the Georgia coast, and all throughout S. GA, are hundreds of thousands of dawg fans for whom Jacksonville is much more convenient of a venue than Athens or Atlanta.

Yep.

Georgia won't move the game. Kirby is just working angles for future negotiating. If Georgia ever did decide to have the game in ATL every other year when they are the home team, I would love to see UF rotate it between Jax, Tampa, Orlando and Miami. Gator fans in those areas would love it. But I just don't see it moving.

& my issue is how many go for the game compared to vacation at the beach?

If it's mostly the latter, then what's wrong with alternating the location?

& what proof is there that it will be treated like that?

Does the IB get treated as such? Egg Bowl? Etc.?

Sounds like it was a combination of railway access and ticket revenue:
quote:

Since 1933, all but two games in this rivalry have been played in Jacksonville.

In the early 1900s, college football stadiums weren't as massive as they are now. Georgia had a rickety old baseball field which served as the football field. Florida scheduled two or three games a year at Fairfield Stadium in Jacksonville.

Located on the railroad line, Jacksonville was a relatively easy trip for fans of both teams.

They moved that first game to Jacksonville because fans of both schools could easily get there by train, and it turned out right. The stadium was sold out that year, and kept drawing fans even as others struggled during the Great Depression.

Even as Georgia and Florida were building bigger stadiums for themselves, they saw the value in playing in a bigger city with potentially higher ticket prices.

But it's also interesting to think that maybe the UGA alumni base has a large presence in Jacksonville because it was easy to get to by rail from there (much as how people often relocate along interstate corridors today).

Pruitt is behind the times. With the December signing day most official visits are now happening in the summer. The fall will be mostly to take unofficial visits for game day atmosphere. The cocktail party will be fine.

I disagree kind sir

Pruitt was the way ahead of his time when he offered the original NIL deal -a McDonald's bag full of cash to recruits.

A trailblazer

Game needs to stay in jville but let's also stop being pussies and let it be the cocktail party again

Nationally, neither Georgia or Florida is a big enough name (like Ohio State and Michigan, for example) to automatically get the prime time TV slot for the rivalry if one of the teams is awful and the game is on campus.

The name Alabama carries a LOT more weight.

Egg Bowl?

If they didn't play this on Thanksgiving night, it would get buried in the pile with other rivalries that weekend and would likely end up as a nooner on ESPNU.

If we ever regress back to the Richt years, I guarandamntee you that 5-3 Georgia playing 4-4 Florida in Athens or Gainesville would get a decidedly mediocre TV slot. Maybe the first time it gets on campus would be a big deal but after that, no.

You would be surprised how many people outside of the SEC footprint don't realize that Georgia/Florida is a pretty damn big rivalry.

the most loyal (and some say largest) sector of the Dawg fanbase is in South Georgia, and this game is for them. Jax is closer for a lot of them, especially in southeast Georgia, than Athens

The largest block of season ticket holders are from metro Atl and those same folks are the ones that go to Jax and get preferences on those seats.

Funny because everywhere I've looked, people know what "WLOCP" means & who's in it.

The majority of the fanbase wants to keep it in Jacksonville. And it should stay there.

What I DO think should change are these neutral site kickoff games. We're playing Oregon in Atlanta. Why not just do a home and home on campus??
