Lovie Smith coached the Bears to a Super Bowl. That's way better than Saban. He also didn't inherit a solid roster like Gruden.

But what's Lovie doing now? About to get fired at Illinois

NFL success doesn't always mean NCAA success

ok, then Lovie Smith's lack of success doesn't mean Gruden won't be successful right?

Also, there a monumental difference in trying to build a program at Illinois as compared to Tennessee.

Oh, so his 5 division titles and 1 Super Bowl win don't really matter because he was fired after a 9-7 season and coaching in the NFL for 11 years. What a fricking bum right?

Yes, this is correct. He probably won't even be able to recruit.

This is a perfect game for LSU and Corch O to lose. Simply because there's no reason for it.

I'm expecting a Troy-like performance

I have yet to get an answer to this question I have asked many times: Can somebody give me a legitimate answer as to the appeal of hiring Gruden? The guy has been out of coaching for a decade or so. Hasn't had to beat the recruiting trail and deal with the issues of 18-22 year old amateurs and all that comes with that.

What is the appeal?

If we get Kelly.

Not even remotely.

This ain't pro ball.

Gruden doesn't scare me.

Couldn't they be in Tampa to talk to Charlie Strong?

John Gruden won a Super Bowl in the NFL too

With an elite defense he inherited from Tony Dungy. He was ultimately a .500 coach in Tampa and got fired. He only won more than 9 games twice there, and two really bad seasons.

Whos the team he played against in the Superbowl?

Oh, there it is. You know the team he left the year prior was the team he played in that Super Bowl right? Does he get credit for that SB appearance since Dungy gets credit for his SB win? And you also know that Tampa Bay team went 11-5 in 1999, 10-6 in 2000, and 9-7 in 2001 (that's called a downward trend). Then Gruden went 12-4 and won the Super Bowl in 2002. But I'm sure he had nothing to do with any team's success in the NFL. Not the Raiders or the Bucs.

No, the problem is you gave up like 30 draft picks to poach him from Oakland

Major issue with Gruden was he couldn't develop a solid QB.

He found offense more important than Defense, see removing three NFL hall of fame level defenders from his roster to add more offensive talent.

He didn't recognize talent well at all in the draft which he had a large part of.

He is a good X and O coach. No doubt there. He will do better than Butch at Tenn. It's just a complete unknown if it works in College. College you don't have elite talent like the NFL. Can he dumb down his offense to work with kids just out of their teens? Had major issues with it at Tampa.

Gruden isn't a terrible hire. I just don't know that outside of name, it will be elite.

At least Kelly is proven on a college level as elite. Which is why I'm not worried about his pro career really at all. Even though it was better than Saban and Spurriers, so not a terrible sign his offense can work at a high level.

What's the holdup?

Currie has had plenty of time to get a deal done with Gruden.

Is Gruden scared?

This I agree with mostly unless they pay him 10m+ a year and could end up being one of the worst hires ever.

His name will carry a lot of weight with recruits and bring some excitement back to KVille but they would be better served by paying him less with bonuses tagged on until he can prove he can coach at the collegiate level.
