No. It was a great hit, led by the shoulder pad.
There's no such thing as "targeting." If he'd led with the crown of the helmet it would be spearing.

Yeah that's targeting. Bama had a targeting no call at Vandy that was pretty huge too. Seems they've decided to go against the actual definition of targeting now and instead just call whatever they like.

Targeting rule is awful and should go away until something reasonable can be put into place.

I hope we eventually look back on this shitty era of overzealous targeting calls with as much disdain as we now look back on the Covid era of forced mask-wearing and school shut-downs.

No. Learn the rules.
I spoke with a D1 referee yesterday. The review was looking at the LSU player launching himself upwards. The player did not:
1. Lead with the crown of helmet
2. Hit the player in the head or neck area.
- said it was a vicious hit (which makes it look worse) but clearly was not targeting.

Frankly, depends on the officials. Some of the dumb shite said:
They lowered their head. Well try tackling in the open field without lowering your head win standing straight up.
They launch, same as above, try directing your energy and not launch. When tackling grown men.
To me, it should be 100% did the defender headhunt, if not, it's not targeting.
Two players arriving at the same place with velocity will always look bad.

Definately not why we lost. We came out turning the ball over is the reason we lost. Our defense is pretty good but the offense puts them in terrible positions. To their credit they kept it mostly to FGs in the first half but offense wasnt clicking. Probably because of the dirty Tennessee player that tried to take Green out

You shouldn’t be allowed to watch a football game if you want that to be targeting

Hit him with his shoulder. Clean hit...

his foot never leaves the ground. To "launch," by definition, your feet have to leave the ground
quote:
Launch - a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
HTH
Ryan also doesn't hit him in the head or neck area (put his shoulder into the receiver's chest), and didn't lead with the crown of his helmet (led with his shoulder, and his head was up). There are zero indicators of targeting on that play. It being a big hit on a defenseless player does not equal targeting. That was basically textbook of what you want to do under the current rules.

I think so, because he launched himself into a defenseless player. Without the launch, it's probably with a legit shoulder tackle.

It was definitely targeting, Ryan should have been ejected for the rest of the year and we should have been made to forfeit…….feel better?
