The college board is appointed by the governor.

Then it will be a conservative Chancellor. Not hard to see that

The board member terms are 12 years. So, Bryant, a USM grad has probably appointed no more than 4. Barbour, an Ole Miss grad (both under grad and law) appointed several. He too is conservative but Dan Jones would have never been moved from UMMC to Oxford if the criteria for the Chancellor is "conservative". He's liberal and all about diversity. I think this is getting way off the tracks and one's politics shouldn't really play into this selection as much a vision for where higher education and what's good for Ole Miss. A lot of the money is behind "we need someone to get athletics back on track". Athletics are important but shouldn't be the main focus for a chancellor. Not to give away too much information but I have met every OM Chancellor since Porter Fortune and got Christmas cards from many of them because of where I worked. I have been following IHL stuff for years. They can be a pain in the arse but they, as a group, truly want what's best for each of the public universities. Loyalties to alma maters is pretty far down the list in the way of priorities. If you look at the present list of board members, many didn't even go to school in Mississippi.

Just checked the website. Bryant appointed all 12 members and it looks like their terms are for either eight or nine years. I think your point about the balance of the board stands, though.

Phil Bryant has appointed all 12 members of the Current Board. First Governor in history to do that.

I am retired. I don't keep up with it as closely as I once did. Must have been some early retirements (quit). The Dan Jones thing took a bunch out of all of them.

College board terms are 9 years. Voters in 2003 reduced it from 12 to 9 years. That's what has eventually led to one Governor appointing all 12.

That is incorrect. Ole Miss people did not want the last chancellor at all. Phil Bryant who appoints IHL members hates Ole Miss and will make sure they get another weak chancellor. Miss St did get who they wanted in Keenum but Ole Miss will not be that fortunate. The last chancellor did enough damage to hurt the school for years.

State did get Keenum eventually, but MSU wanted Keenum at least two presidents earlier but the then-OM-led IHL wouldn’t allow it. They even forced State to have an interim for a couple years, then hired a dud. Due to the OM-led IHL, State went through many years of bad presidents between Zacharias and Keenum, except for maybe the Air Force General, but even he wasn’t qualified academically.

I thought Malcolm Portera was pretty good. Alabama system stole him, as I recall. Fogelsong I thought was a train wreck talking to people up there that worked for him.

The Chancellor is chosen by an independent committee and not by anyone affiliated directly with the university. Same as MSU and other public universities. Nice try though.

You really believe that? You don't think those decisions can be, and are easily influenced?

And here I thought I was talking about the IHL and the process for selecting a Chancellor/College President.

Silly me.

Fogelsong was controversial and not very well-liked among the academia at Mississippi State, but he is singularly responsible for setting the wheels in motion that liberated us from Templeton, Croom, and Polk II.

I used the wrong term. Majority is not the right word. But MSU is the predominant undergrad with 25%, including the president of the board currently and I believe with the Vitter nomination they were at 33# (4/12)

I'm not claiming any conspiracy or that MSU conspired to give Ole Miss a bad chancellor or that they're currently doing it. Just pointing things out. But I did use the wrong word when I said majority.
