Is there a better "bad QB" coach than Mullen?

I mean a coach of bad QBs, not a QB Coach who is bad.

I would say Dan Mullen consistently does more with less than any other OC or HC out there.

Look at some of his QBs in the past

Chris Relf
Tyler Russell
Nick Fitzgerald
Felipe Franks
Kyle Trask

and he somehow has pieced together a winning record at Miss State, and won 10 games at Florida in year 1.

Sure he got Dak Prescott and Tebow when he was an OC at Florida. But he gets solid production out of a lot of future Insurance salesmen.

I mean, I'd argue the first 4 were just plain bad.

But Mullen is a very good QB coach.

Look at some of the seasons he squeezed our of Franks and Fitzgerald.

Look what happened to Moorehead when he tried to jsut treat Fitzgerald like a QB.

The only competition i can think of is Jimbo who coached the following into tricking teams to take them in the first

Jamarcus Russell
Christian Ponder
EJ MAnuel
Jameis Winston

It's kind of a double-edged sword.

On one hand, he takes lesser-rated guys and makes more out of them than anyone else in the country could. On the other hand, the reason he has all these project QBs is because he can't seem to reel in the elite prospects.

Fitz was good against bad teams and miserable against good teams.

All of those were good QBs except for Russell. Russell wasn’t a good QB, although nobody really ever thought he was. People unfortunately consider Russell to be a bust because they forget that people were laughing at the Raiders for selecting him from the moment the pick was announced.

The fact that we won 9 games with Chris Relf is a testament to Mullen’s coaching abilities. Relf might be the least talented qb in the SEC of the last two decades.

I remember when Croom signed Relf. It was a legit "Who?" This guy was mediocre in high school, none of the recruiting services tracked him.

No other interest. Not even D-II.

He ruined Tyler Russell’s playing career. Relf was a TE playing QB. Fitz was only good when he was high on cocaine. Tyson Lee is who you left off. Our offense under Mullen only worked When you had a big imposing QB who could truck people.

Is he? Dax was a good QB. The rest, he never beat any good teams with. He has one QB in the NFL. Tebow was just a FB in Urbans system. Similar to the OSU QBs.

Dont forget Alex Smith and Chris Leak both improved a lot with him.

You know Mullen invented that system...right? Even Meyer credits him. He also started RPOs at Utah(though somewhat accidently)

Meyer was never an offensive mastermind he was a special teams guy. Mullen made the offense

#3 in QB Rating.
#4 in Total QBR. (Both SEC)
Broke Chris Leak's consecutive completion record.
First QB to throw for over 300 yards against LSU since Rex Grossman 2001 (or AUB, BAMA, UGA).
Broke Franks' single game passing record twice, started four games while Franks played 27.

I think people only call him a "bad" QB because they misread his situation. Played at a high school where he wasn't built for their style of offense. Then McElwain left and the offense changed once again that "didn't fit his style".

Keep in mind, he's doing this with basically a non-existent run game. Teams have been able to stop our run game with four guys no problem -- including Towson. So Trask is basically throwing into pass defenses and still somehow managing his numbers.

It's impressive that Mullen had no idea that the best QB was on the bench.

Meyer literally said last month he created the RPO system.

He said he and Mullen. Mullen was the offensive mind of the two and it's even in his damn biography.

Okay. I guess the article detailing how he developed it is wrong. You are right.

Dak was also nobody before Mullen started coaching him. So was Alex Smith. Tebow and Franks are the two highest rated QB recruits (and really the only blue-chip recruits I can think of) he's ever coached unless you count the year he had with Cam at Florida.

He won 10 games with Franks as his qb in the SEC.
On that fact alone he's a miracle worker.
