This is a Starkville sucks thread, not a College Station rulez thread.

Someone was comparing the two... I posted links.

Shane... their trying to make Northgate into the 4th-6th street areas in Austin. Already has 32 bars and growing with more slated beer gardens and rooftop open air bars coming in over the next couple of years. I've seen a few of the licenses out there for approval.

Unlike Austin, they are making it into more of a walking mall like Pearl Street in Boulder, so everyone will be able to walk on bricked in areas and grassy surfaces as opposed to roads. If I would compare it to something local, it would be like City Centre in Houston or Waterway District in the Woodlands.

Are they planning on shutting down all the streets in surrounding area at night (Boyett, Church, etc) after all the construction? Game weekends will be awesome if it becomes a college town version of City Centre or the Waterway

They are going to brick them in so no traffic will be able to drive on them. It will be one huge 4 block walking mall.

Ditto. It's ok for watching a game. We also just got a Newks which is pretty good food.

At the old CDC (called Staggerin) was a fun place to watch the MSU UK game yesterday. Every time MSU hit a 3 pointer everyone got a free round of house shots.

I was drunk the first half, sobered up the 2nd half.

My vote goes to Bryan. Crappy strip mall heaven. And the 19th century prison/NAZI revival architecture on campus kind of creeps me out as well.

Awesome. They need to let open container drinking back there again too, I'd heard that was also in the works

Oxford's great because it's more than just a school and a collection of bars. I could go on and on but whatever. You either won't listen or are too dense to understand.

More than just a school? You realize that Oxford is the smallest town in the SEC right? Not exactly the best argument to make.
Anyway, I like Oxford, so you don't have to convince me. I've spent a lot of time there. All I'm saying is that you are letting your love for your school blind you from the greater argument here. Oxford has the square, Starkville has the Cotton District, Oxford has a few good bars, Starkville has a few good bars. And don't go into some bullshite about Ole Miss culture and reading Faulkner on a park bench. You are tied with us for the LOWEST admission requirements in the SEC.

I'm not sure why Tuscaloosa seems to get a pass. It was the worst city I visited when looking at schools. It's a trash heap outside of the UA campus, which is beautiful.

Of the SEC schools I visited in high school, I liked Vandy, UGA, and Ole Miss the most. Tuscaloosa was the worst.

It is... its going to be a controlled area where you can walk from bar to bar and have drinks outside of the bar premises.

Tuscaloosa is shitty.

Starkville is a nice town, it's just small. You get the typical historical small town Mississippi feel. We have a very nice campus and the areas in Starkville around the campus are nice. Cotton District and Downtown area are all nice and have a good number of great bars.

Of course you can go to the other side of Starkville to the more "ghetto" area and it's pretty shitty but you get that with every town

Downfall is that we aren't located anywhere near a big metro area. Starkville is continually growing and getting nicer every year, which is why our enrollment number are going way up. We will only continue to build and get better. Currently we are a top 20 fastest growing research university. .

Starkville will be having a lot of changes if we keep growing. Like this, which will add a lot.

The CottonMill marketplace would have been badass... especially if they had a couple new bars.

Are they still talking about building this? Last I know the developers backed out on the project in 09.

Tuscaloosa gets a pass because Alabama fans have never tried to pass it off as paradise or "nice" like some fanbases do about their city. Tuscaloosa as a city is pretty meh. Having said that, it does get a bit of a bad rap as there are some very nice areas/neighborhoods from just north of the river all the way to Lake Tuscaloosa. The problem is that visitors don't even have a clue this area exists because it's off the main beaten path and you only see these areas if you go the Rice Mine road route to Northriver Yacht Club or Lake Tuscaloosa. That's a huge chunk of both Tuscaloosa and Northport that visitors never see.

When I graduated from Alabama in the 90s I had no desire to stay in Tuscaloosa nor do most UA graduates. Having said that, the city has improved dramatically the last 7 or 8 years. The city now has a bright young mayor and is improving. It will be interesting to see how the new re-development plan in the city builds out.

By state law not by choice. We also have the lowest GPA in SEC and have a 4 year graduation rate of 33%. It's not like we're passing these idiots that the state makes us accept

So when multiple national unbiased publications name Oxford as one of the top college towns in the nation we should ignore that? It's not biased if the majority of other people say the same thing.

And before you all get your panties in a wad I don't think Oxford is perfect and I would do some nasty shite if it meant Mayor Hawkins/Butler would become Oxfords mayor. Its got something wrong with it, but it is an elite college town
