A good idea? Examples of where it worked out really well?
Coach O and jimbo won an NC at FSU and LSU because they struck lightening in a bottle on 1 game changing QB. They both fizzled out and were exposed eventually.
Ryan Day and Dabo (circa 2015-18)I guess are the best consistent winners.

Within the last 18 years there have been 5 national championships won by coaches that were promoted from within. Dabo at Clemson has 2, Jimbo at FSU, Coach O at LSU and Ryan Day at Ohio State.
So yeah, it’s pretty common for it to be a good move.

Jumbo was brought in as Head Coach in waiting. FSU was trying to get Bobby Bowden to retire but he didn’t want to. Bowden was FSU it would have been like Alabama trying to fire Nick Saban.

Clemson, Ohio State, Florida State, and LSU have done it, but Ole Miss is none of these.

At the time when Coach O was brought in I thought they were bringing him in to be the interim coach for when they fired Les Miles.
Miles had been on and off the hot seat and I was always under the impression they were looking for the best spot to can him. They wiffed at one point and Miles was brought back.
They finally fired him, but O was such a media sensation and won some games that they hired him after their target coach (Jumbo?) backed out.

And before 2020, there was Tom Osborne and Joe Paterno. Both were promoted from assistant positions and won nattys.

Marcus Freeman was promoted from within and so far seems like an upgrade to Brian Kelly
