Why do you get a pass for being a bust it’s not a personal attack, he went #1, ahead of Kevin Durant and played 105 total games over 7 years and wasn’t really any good when he played. Pretty much the text book definition of bust

Funny thing is it was Portland that took him, they have the 2 biggest you took that over this guy picks of all time

Godawful is a stretch. He still had 8 years in the nba

2000 draft was horrible. He had no business going that high

The biggest LSU NBA draft bust is probably Tyrus Thomas. He went 4th and had the career of an okay 2nd round pick.

Nah, Stromile Swift

I grade busts on why they were a bust.

Injuries get a bit of a pass unless it was due to a player being completely fricking stupid, like Jay Williams and Kellen Winslow Jr fricking themselves up in motorcycle accidents.

Someone completely healthy who failed because they wouldn’t put in the work needed to do the job, like a JaMarcus Russell, tends to be worse than a guy whose body gives up on them like Steve Entman unless it was because they were just completely out of shape or did something stupid that permanently damaged them.

A guy going 2nd overall shouldn’t have the kind of career numbers he had.

And this was with him playing on the Vancouver Grizzlies, who were one of the most putrid teams of all time around that point. They got off on a bad foot as an expansion team and didn’t get anything right until they hit Memphis IIRC.

Depends on context.

Orlando will never live down taking Fran Vasquez around 15th one year because he never joined the team.

That is the highest pick never to play for a team that didn’t die between the draft and the season in the modern NBA.

That's like saying Bo Jackson is an NFL bust with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

That’s fine to grade a low effort guy differently but a bust is still bust. I would grade a guy that gets hurt early in has career a little differently maybe, Kijana Carter for example but still a bust because he never did anything

Different draft rules in each league.

NFL and MLB picks, as of now, only convey rights for a year unless signed.

NBA picks convey rights somewhat permanently. If you pick someone, they can’t even talk to another NBA team unless you have refused to sign them.

Vasquez would be more comparable to an NFL team drafting a USFL player in the high first who retires after that league folds, or heads to the CFL by choice, rather than join the NFL.

Everyone can have their own opinion on what makes a bust.

I just tend to give more leeway on a guy who could have been but got injured than a guy who just didn’t “get it” at the next level maturity-wise or physically.

1986 NBA draft is a good example. A lot of guys there had talent but flames out in part because they were so coked out of their gourds.

Chris Washburn was 3rd overall and ended up out of the league because his drug problem was horrible, resulting in a permanent ban for a third strike, and he never gained any maturity from HS to NC State to his time in the league.

For the NFL... Jamarcus might be the biggest draft bust, but Ryan Leaf is still up there. Brian Bosworth as well.

Ben Simmons isn't the biggest bust in NBA draft history. Not even really close.

I counter your Jamarcus and Simmons with Burrow and Shaq.

I get what you are saying and it’s not “blaming” the guy, there can be degrees of bust but there were concerns about Odens health coming out, same with Sam Bowie but Portland still took them, gambling on the potential and it didn’t work to me that’s a bust.

How many first round picks were ultimately spent on Trent Richardson?

#1 overall pick you say?

I think Jamarcus is #1.

Ruggs cant be #1 because he wasnt a traditional bust, but he still deserves to be mentioned.

Ben Simmons doesn't even belong in the conversation of biggest busts in NBA history. Not many busts get a max extension for their second contract.

He just became a huge disappointment.

Anthony Bennett is far and away the worst #1 pick in the NBA draft imo. He averaged less than 5 ppg on 30% shooting and was traded for peanuts then the team that traded for him bought him out.

Then the 2nd biggest busts are bad players who were taken above hall of famers. Guys like Kwame, Darko, Bowie, Thabeet, etc.

Then there are guys who were decent but not nearly as good as expected like Elton Brand, Kenyon Martin, Andrew Bogut, Glenn Robinson

Simmons probably isn't even a top 30 bust in NBA history

I get called a homer when I argue Leaf is worse than Russell. The argument is always Leaf was #2, and that's it. As I recall before that draft, Manning and Leaf were talked about as 1A and 1B and both HoFers.

No one had that expectation of Russell. So to me the combination of draft slot and expectation puts Leaf higher.
