I look at it in hindsight at this point because, simply put, it already happened.
He provoked, someone who had previously indicated they would kill him tried to kill him, he shot in self defense.
I think “the process is the punishment” applies here because this trial likely bankrupts him even though I don’t see him getting convicted.

There is a range of options and going straight for “knock their teeth out” isn’t always the best one.
