What does that have to do with discussing whether or not LSU is a top 5 currently?

You seem to have left off the school has far more billionaire donors.than your list
A NIL collective that is recognized as one of the best.
The best AD in America at the moment.
A chancellor who will go to court swinging to protect the athletic programs

Not afraid to spend money on recruits or coaches.
Top 2 talent rich state with nfl talent per capita.
Top recruits in the state that want to stay home go to one school.

Top 5? I don't know.

Top 15 in the SEC for sure though.

2 championships in past 40 years.

3 total

And you somehow think UGA is a top 5 job?

Just be glad you have a great coach. I hope he lasts a long time for you and gets you a few more. UGA has shown no ability to be relevant without him.

Ole Miss is a top 20 job?

Seems reasonable.

You don't hire like it's a top5.

Before coming to LSU, Les Miles was 28-21 at Oklahoma St, 16-16 in the Big12. His record the year before being hired by LSU was 7-5. His best year at OKST was 9-4.

Coach O was 10-25 at Ole Miss and 3-21 in the SEC. His only other HC job was 6-2 as an interim coach at USC after Sark was fired. Se he was 16-27 before LSU hired him. LSU hired him internally as he was serving as a DL coach.

And then there is Brian Kelly. A guy most people knew was only successful due to many of Notre Dames traditional rivals being way down and having an easier than normal schedule for Notre Dame. And even his best seasons were vacated by the NCAA. His big accomplishment was losing a playoff game. I think Notre Dame was generally happy to get rid of him. They've done better without him.

Now I get that if you can win a NC with Les Miles and Coach O, you can damn near win one with any coach. But I'm gonna have to see LSU actually hire a top5 coach before I'll accept LSU is a top5 job.

His big accomplishment was losing a BCS National Championship to Nick Saban and Alabama like everybody else was losing to. Whether you like him or not he was the winningest active coach when LSU fired him.

What about all those lame coaches at Bama before Saban? You only got him because Rich Rod turned Bama down.

From 1979 to 2009 Bama only had 1 NC. That's relatively shocking considering how we think of Bama today. Most of your success is attributed to two men. He'll, Bama might still be wandering in the desert if LSU hadn't brought Saban to the SEC or he simply stayed in the NFL.

Ole Miss isn't better, but they're looking lateral at worst

With steady, committed NIL and opportunities for playing time several jobs could become lateral.

Well, it wasn't even remotely considered to be a top 5 job before Saban got here.

No one would have considered LSU a top 5 job at that point either. The success that came from hiring those two coaches is what would make people think that it could be a top 5 job. LSU completely changed it approach to supporting a championship program.

ETA: I am not saying that it is a top 5 job. I'm only saying that trying to include what happened before 2000 as a barameter for whether or not it is a top 5 job now is dumb. No one deciding to go to LSU is basing that decision on what happened or didn't happen over 25 years ago.

I think most would rank Saban either #1 or #2 all time. We hired him.

So I guess I will accept your acceptance of LSU being a top5 job.

Consolidation of conferences, NIL, and the Portal have quickly and dramatically changed the formula to evaluate "top" coaching jobs. Talent is so much less consolidated than it was just a few years ago. And being a member of the B1G or SEC automatically means an equal slice of an enormous conference payout, which automatically puts schools in the ACC, Big 12, and every other conference at a massive resource disadvantage. That's why Clemson and FSU are willing to sue and spend tens of millions of dollars to get out of the ACC.

Recruiting grounds and history matter a lot less now than NIL funds, stability, and a supportive administration. Every SEC school has good-to-great facilities and fanbases (well, maybe not Vandy), and with SEC money flowing, that will continue to be the case.

I would argue that at this exact point in time, any SEC coaching job would rank in the Top 25 nationally. Where does LSU fall in there? It's a lot less clear than it was before all these recent changes. Obviously, it's still an incredible coaching job, I just think the gap between the top SEC coaching jobs and the middle-of-the-pack SEC coaching jobs has significantly narrowed in a very short amount of time.
