Is it a bit surprising Mike Shula never tried another head coaching job?

I think it’s a little surprising myself. I mean considering the sanctions he wasn’t that bad. Even with a 10 season in there. He certainly showed enough ability as a head coach to think he might could have a done well at a smaller program. But I guess that wasn’t what interested him. I don’t remember him even interviewing for jobs or being a candidate.

I miss him at Alabama.

Son of a HOF NFL coach. Took a high pressure job and failed
He’s been an assistant coach in college and pro ever since. Gets to do what he loves without the immense pressure
Maybe some guys just aren’t up for the HC spot after seeing how hard it can be. He’s on the Minnesota Gophers coaching staff now

Could be a number of reasons retreads weren’t as popular when he left bama and committing ncaa infractions basically blackballed you from P5. Could be he’s a guy who just likes coaching; bud foster of vt and Mickey Andrews of fsu had tons of offers to be a head coach but passed everytime. Chip Kelly was successful as a head coach in college and nfl he quit being a head coach. Said he hated it too much bs not enough actual coaching.

Shula was a very poor college OC, and Panthers fans say that Shula hindered that offense, and didn't make it better.
I'm not sure Shula is much of a coach, really. Even still, he's gotta lot less pressure on him as a staffer.

Shula gets way worse ridicule than he should have. Bama was basically handed a death penalty in feb 2002. Fran leaves because it was a no win situation and I don’t blame him. Mike took that job when literally NO ONE wanted it. He beat out Richard Williamson who was almost dead at the time and Sly Croom to give you some reference. He had both hands tied behind his back. The sanctions ended in 05 and his 05 and 06 classes were both top 10 but it would be a couple years before those guys would contribute so he was still trying to play with basically FCS caliber guys. Here’s some names of guys he signed though later on. Antoine Caldwell, Mike Johnson, Javier Arenas, Glenn coffee, Greg McElroy, Mike McCoy, Brandon Dedrick, Corey Reamer, JP Wilson, Chris Rogers, Baron Huber, Andre Smith, Rashad Johnson, Preston dial and Justin Woodall. These guys were the core of the 08 team and national title team in 09. A few of those would be all Americans.
I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. The 2008 team was gonna be good no matter what. Finish the regular season 12-0? Probably not but howdy doody could have have coached the 08 team to a BCS bowl.

There are reasons why coaches are lifetime coordinators/assistants.

He was Bama's Nalier, in way over his head. Yes he failed. I'll always remember his pass to Al Bell to beat Jawja though!
