It mostly depends on your definition of rivalry. There are those who claim that LSU v Bama are not rivals and they share a great deal more recent history with Bama than UGA does.
Bama and UGA have been 1A and 1B (or is it 1B and 1A?) for a while now.
For this particular moment, UGA is at the top of the mountain, and because of that, they get everyone's best game, which gives a "rivalry feel" to those matchups.

Not yet, but way ahead of Saban at his age. Way ahead.
You say that like Smart didn't need Coach Saban to be where he is. You guys should get with Ole Miss, and Shorthorns fans and have a sing-a-long, "I Did It My Way."
By this logic the greatest coach of all time is one of George Perles, Gary Tranquil, Earle Bruce, Frank Cignetti or Frank Malone. Saban was an assistant coach under all 5 before becoming a head coach so one of them is obviously the GOAT....Alabama's pick, it don't matter to me, but Saban learned somewhere just like Smart.....

They are not a traditional rival but there used to be history between the two schools. There's a reason why Georgia is mentioned in our fight song. Back during the 20s we played against each other fairly frequently. We really didn't play quite as much during the 30s or 40s but picked back up the series in the 50s and 60s. However, starting in the 70s, we started to play them more and more infrequently and that trend has continued into the present day.

Every elite coach has a mentor who helped them get there. Smart had Saban, Saban had Belichick, Belichick had Parcells, etc....
It's a big game right now because of the status of the two programs, and it's a good measuring stick game, but it's not a rivalry.

Exactly, nobody does it alone, and these guys are the first to tell you that. It's a coaching STAFF.
To all the people still saying Kirby's a Saban clone - why is Kirby the only one who's found a similar level of success? You think he's the only person to copy Saban in the last 20 years??

Looks like you are letting some insecurity get the better of you.

FSU is the real rival of UGA and Alabama that’s why the sec won let them into the conference because the thought of a Florida program that actually wants to compete is a legit threat to them.
FSU had a chance to join the SEC but declined. Bobby Bowdon said it was easier to win a national title in the ACC.

59-39-7 UT isn’t a rival anymore.
Alabama -UGA is 43-26-4. They have to win 17 straight to tie the series.

No, though it was more of an annual game pre-1992.
No, pre-1992 we still rarely played Georgia.

No one questions Alabama And OSU have the system in place to be great for long periods of time with the right coach.
UGA will ultimately hire some douche Academic type Dean and poof, gone for a decade or more

FSU is not a rival for Alabama, they probably are for Florida. Georgia fans will probably say Clemson and Florida are their big rivals, while Bama will say Tennessee and Auburn

Georgia was a perfect situation for Smart. They were tired of getting embarrassed with Richt and were ready to commit to a guy that could hopefully recreate what Saban had done at 'Bama, and knew the blueprint on how to make it happen from the man himself. I'm going to assume the boosters got out of his way like 'Bama's did for CNS, and no one tried to interfere or tell him how to build his program.
Kirby was also always a great recruiter, so UGA finally bringing in top talent and hiring a solid staff brought them to where they are today. You can't dismiss the great coordinator hires he made that contributed a lot to that run. Saban whiffed on a few coordinators over the years and it cost him several more titles.
So yeah, pretty much a perfect storm of hiring the right guy at the right place. Not so easy to replicate with just any former Saban assistant.

Vols tried so hard to make it happen. They even involved McDonald’s.

With Saban gone, it’s nothing more than a game between two top teams in recent years.

Pruitt was a great coach, but always kind of a meat head. He never had a real chance with Fat Phil there running things. A 'Bama guy like him should have known.

Upon further reflection, the reason it's not a rivalry imo is thus: At no point in memory has a loss to Bama felt embarassing. Discouraging, disheartening etc sure, but never embarassing. It's just too bad so sad we didn't quite beat nick Saban just like everyone else in CFB.
Contrast that with the buzzkill last second Tech losses in 2014 & 2016. Or FL in 2014 when they came in unranked and kicked our #9 arse by running for 400+ yards. Those losses just piss you off and make you feel small. It's the kind of thing that grinds your gears all offseason
