Is Florida football a One-Hit Wonder?

Almost all of the Gators’ football success occurred between the seasons of 1985-2009.
In terms of AP Poll Points (25 pts for a 1st place finish, 24 pts for a 2nd place finish, etc) here’s where Florida ranked nationally and compared to other SEC programs during that era and also the two eras surrounding that brief period of dominance.
AP Poll Points (1936-1984)
1. Notre Dame- 686
2. Oklahoma- 653
3. Alabama- 605
4. Michigan- 587
5. Ohio St- 576
6. Texas- 528
7. USC- 516
8. Nebraska- 458
9. Tennessee- 398
10. Penn St- 363
12. LSU- 325
13. Arkansas- 321
15. Georgia- 286
16. Auburn- 274
17. Ole Miss- 267
28. Texas A&M- 160
29. Missouri- 158
41. FLORIDA- 113
46. Kentucky- 96
Then came Florida’s era of dominance….
AP Poll Points (1985-2009)
1. Florida St- 382
2. Miami- 378
3. FLORIDA- 355
4. Michigan- 341
5. Nebraska- 316
6. Ohio St- 308
7. Oklahoma- 282
8. Tennessee- 279
9. Penn St- 275
10. Alabama- 251
12. Texas- 235
13. Auburn- 227
14. Georgia- 216
15. LSU- 211
18. Texas A&M- 169
33. Arkansas- 82
39. Ole Miss- 54
The state of Florida was absolutely dominant in that era. But it’s also most like when Alabama took down Tebow in the #1 vs #2 SEC Title Game of 2009, the era of Gator dominance came to an abrupt close.
AP Poll Points (2010-2023)
1. Alabama- 314
2. Ohio St- 274
3. Clemson- 222
4. Oklahoma- 214
5. Georgia- 201
6. Oregon- 173
7. LSU- 166
8. Notre Dame- 152
9. Florida St- 139
10. Michigan- 137
20. Auburn- 83
21. FLORIDA- 82
22. Texas A&M- 68
23. S Carolina- 64
25. Missouri- 82
28. Ole Miss- 57
29. Texas- 56
37. Miss St- 39
39. Tennessee- 37
#21 is formidable, but certainly not impressive. Worst yet, since 2010 the Gators have zero SEC Titles and zero Top 5 finishes.
It’s crazy to me that the entire state of Florida could be dormant as a football power for decades…. Then have the the Top 3 programs for a a quarter century, and then basically fall back down to mediocrity (with the exception of a few seasons for FSU).
Will be interesting to see if the Gators can ever get it rolling again to the level they had it going from 1985-2009.

well florida has won 2 titles in the BCS/Playoff era and Auburn has won 1 title
so Auburn is literally a 1 hit wonder where florida is not

Those Gator wins in the mid to late 80s were the result of 103 NCAA violations.

No, what you are describing is not a one-hit wonder.

Kinda proves the point, doesn’t it?
Auburn won a National Title in 1957 as well as 2010. Played for it again in 2013…. Had Top 5 finishes in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.
Our success has been fairly spread out over the course of the past 75 years.
Literally Florida has zero major success outside the 1985-2009 time period.

Wasn’t that AU 1957 title revoked due to massive cheating?

Who knows. We suck right now, which is all that matters imo.

No. Carry on.

A "one-hit wonder" refers to a singular thing. Maybe you were looking for the phrase "twenty-four year wonder"

What does that make Auburn?

I don’t know, you tell me. Can you condense all of our National Titles, SEC Titles, and Top 5 finishes all down into a period slightly longer than the lifespan of a family pet?

The spurrier years were unreal. Unfortunately, CUM Meyer poisoned the program culture with the likes of Hernandez and the rest of the Gator convicts, so much so it still hasn’t recovered. That was 15yrs ago

I hate Florida as much as anyone, but this thread is dumb as hell. They won titles with Spurrier and Meyer. I would say that means by definition, they're not a one hit wonder. All they need is the right coach there.
Auburn on the other hand is definitely a one hit wonder. They had Cam Newton for one year and that's it. Haven't done shite since and they're the second rate football program in their own state.

ummm… 2006 = 1. 2008 = 1. 1 + 1 = 2.
Are you sure you’re not a Bama fan?

look I love railing on UF as much as the next guy but that's a friggin 30 year time span. That's about a quarter of their football playing history

BUT, to get back on track, they are very clearly (IMO) the 5th best SEC team historically behind Bama/UGA/LSU/UT. The real SEC I shoudl say. If you want to throw in Tx/OU they're no better than barely above the halfway mark. Ouch.

You have 2 national titles. The first was 1957.
As for SEC titles, all but one of them fit in a 30 year window. The other is 1957.
And you have less of them than Florida.
If I had to pick a history, I'd pick Florida's over Auburn.

24 seasons of dominance is a heckuva one-hit. I bet Gata was the winningest program in the conference in that span.

Exactly. Auburn had sporadic success, but really only became consistent once Pat Dye took over.
