Is Bo Rein the last active SEC football coach to pass away?

I certainly wish the best for Leach--but it got me thinking about if such a situation had happened recently. Am I forgetting someone obvious? Or has it really been since 1980. Even though Rein never coached a game, he was in the position of head coach and was recruiting when he met his tragic demise.

didn't he pass in a plane accident?

Correct. He flew to North Louisiana for a recruiting visit in early January in a little private plane and on the return trip, the pilot tried to fly around some storms and ended up way off the radar and eventually crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

They now think it was similar to the situation with Payne Stewart's plane where it got to too high of an altitude and lost cabin pressure.

Probably Bo Rein. But did either head coach of Marshall or Wichita State die in those plane crashes?

Rein and his pilot died when their oxygen supply malfunctioned at high altitude. The plane eventually crashed into the Atlantic off the Carolina coast.

Also back in the 40s Knute Rockne and noted journalist Wiley Post died in a plane crash.

Coaches of both teams died, but both of those happened in 1970 a little over a month apart.

Marshall lost most of the team.

South Carolina’s Joseph R. Morrison died in 1989, while coaching, he collapsed and died in the offseason. USC wasn’t in the SEC yet though.

I wasn't aware of this one. LSU beat them in the Gator Bowl in his next to last year.

And Morrison was chain-smoking on the sidelines. Different era for sure.

Some may remember Jim Pittman actually died on the sidelines while coaching TCU in 1971. He had previously coached at Tulane and was in his first year at TCU. His son Brad was the QB at Rummel in 1970 before transferring to Texas with his dad. Pittman played at Mississippi State and his son went on to play DB at Ole Miss.

Well researched post.

Post and Will Rogers were killed in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935.

Rockne was killed years earlier (1931) in the crash of a passenger aircraft.

I don’t mean to be snarky - but you didn’t know about it? I guess that wouldn’t be too surprising if you’re relatively young.

The movie is worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

"We Are Marshall"

Most tear-inducing sports movie since "Brian's Song."

I was trying to think back to the last major college or even professional coached that passed while active couldn't think of one since Marshall. Really remarkable stat given the pressure cooker lives those folks lead.

Thats wild. Did college or pro players smoke on the sidelines back in the day too or were only coaches allowed?

Was mentioned earlier in the thread...SC wasn't in the SEC at that point.

I have read several articles and recounts of the events of that night. Pittman collapsed and basically dropped dead on the sidelines and the game continued! For better or worse, that would never happen today.
