I get that gatewood is a rs freshman, but was naming nix the guy a way to build in an excuse for Gus. If he has a 7-5 season and nix struggles, but also shows some signs of talent he can say, “well we’ve got a young qb that’s going to be around for the next three years and the upside is great”. I believe a scenario that has nix struggling some, but showing some signs of talent and fitting well into gus’s systems retains malzahn the job even with a 7-5 season.

It could be, but I doubt it.

If naming Nix the starter was any sort of gimmick (and not because he is the best player for the job) it would likely be an attempt to motivate Gatewood, and let him earn the job as the season progresses.

You shouldn't underestimate the Barn. That would be a mistake. 9-3 for 2019 and they will be in those 3 L's for 60 minutes. Guz will be back for 2020 and that season could be a real challenge for him BUT he will have banked 15 million in the process.

It is my hope the cow college never wins another game but that is just me.

Maybe if he'd recruited better WR's, he wouldn't need an excuse for the QB.

In fairness, every coach who has a bad year uses this excuse.

I don't think Gus needs an excuse. Hes got a pretty big buyout.

I don't see how. It's Gus's fault they are stuck with 2 freshmen in the first place. I think Bo will do just fine with what they are trying to do.

Josey, I bet a $100 that you never attended a class at Alabama. Alabama fans that did go to school there are no where as obnoxious as you are.

2016 - 3 4*'s
2017 - 1 4*
2018 - 3 4*'s
2019 - 1 4*

We are recruiting high ranking WRs, but the problem is what happens when they get here... Bad hands, transfer schools, switch positions, etc...

That's been one of my biggest frustrations. Yes Stidham, White, etc. had their issues, but it doesn't take long to remember how many significant drops our WRs had over the last couple of years.

It's been injuries lately.

Exactly

Gus isn't still around because he's got super persuasive excuse for last season

There are too many examples now of freshman coming in and playing well 1st season. Fromm, Hurts, Cocaine Johnny, Trevor Lawrence, et.al. but I do think it changes the game plan with a true frosh in the 1st game.

I honestly think it helps him to be at a neutral site on the road. I also think that we are going to be a very run heavy team next Saturday and allow Bo to get some confidence in the short passing game. I think he throws maybe 15 or 20 times for a 150 yd or so. We're going to have to run the hell out of the ball to win this one. Boobee needs to strap it up.

Definitely, and don't forget injuries. Also, Davis was great last year, but he should have been the possession WR compliment to a legit deep threat, but the latter never materialized.

Or he could have actually selected the one who is the best QB?

No. If you’re going to start the future of your program. Why not do it when you’ve got a great defense that can mask any mistakes he may make. You certainly don’t want to do it when all that talent on defense heads to the pros next year.

Arkansas fans aren't allowed to comment on Gus. He has made you his bitch.

It isn't. Bo Nix was Mr Football in Alabama, he runs like lighting and he throws like thunder. He won the starting job because he is the better qb. I think he will be good right out of the gate.

How can he be a "built-in" excuse? Gus chose him as the starter so he either sinks or swims with his choice. If anything, he would be a self-inflicted wound if he doesn't produce.
