Hopefully a combination of this and people decided to open up their brain and use it will return Americans to their original love : baseball.

J/K America is way too stupid to be able to sit around and watch something that involves a brain and isn't BOOBS BEER HARD HIT.

That's fine, but a lot of parents are deciding that extreme long shot dream is not worth the damage for their kids.

And when kids don't play, the pipeline starts trickling.

I like baseball, but it is WAY to long..... I have watched the first inning, gone to a movie and come back and watched the last 3 innings.....several times....

Yes there is a chance of making a fortune but it’s not likely at all. Harrison Smith of the Vikings is from Knoxville and is a good family friend of ours and he’s made tens of millions in the sport and you’d probably say that’s worth it (although he comes from a very well off family anyway) but the chances of that happening are very small. You can also make just as much money playing baseball or golf without the risk. Harrison actually told his little brother it was not worth the toll on his body and advised him to pick up golf even as an NFL player.

A situation where it’s the only way your child would be able to get a college education is about the only way I’d be able to justify it as a parent, even then I’m not sure what I’d do.

Bowling for women

Bass fishing for men

Maybe collegiate NASCAR / tractor pulls for the Ag schools in the SEC.
I think this UK entry finished 2nd to Nebraska recently.

Just wait until it gets into the argument of "the poorest minorities among us sacrificing their bodies for rich white people's entertainment". Agree or disagree, but that argument is coming and anyone with a brain knows it.

Btw ... interesting off-season topic, SummerOfGeorge.
Props to you for starting a thread that doesn’t involve the term “daddy” within its title/prompt.

Followup thread : How does Daddy A&M continue to have second and third generations of fans when all their alumni are homosexual men?

We need to excel at the greatest sport in the world - soccer.

Not going to be a pretty situation. A lot of money and self worth tied into that sport, especially in this conference. Whole lot of people are going to be grasping at sand as it falls apart to try and keep it around.

Will be interesting to watch it all play out.

I really do believe that the next generation will not know football as we know it today.... how far off is it? Could be 5 years. Could be 30 years. Who knows, but I think within 5 years we'll start to see the game as we know it change. The changes will likely cause mid-majors to drop the sport first, but within time you'll start to see the bigger schools start debating whether to drop it.

If and when college football meets its demise, here's what I see happening:

1. The rise of College Basketball/Baseball Interest
The NCAA Tournament is one of the best events in sports. The schools will look to increase basketball's popularity to replace the lost revenues from football.

I think the season will be extended... probably running from late September / early October into March. And scheduling improvements will be made to allow TV networks to pick the best matchups 2-3 weeks in advance similar to how football works now. I would think there would also be rule changes made to try to prevent the "One and Done" nature of the sport.

I think college baseball will also be promoted more.

2. Increased Popularity in Soccer
They've been pushing it for 30 years as the next BIG thing to sweep America. While soccer continues to gain popularity, it still comes nowhere close to being as popular as the 3 major US sports. If football disappears, I think this could change. Cities will push to use their now obsolete football stadiums for soccer. Little leagues up to High Schools will also begin to push soccer to use their now obsolete football fields. Eventually NCAA soccer would become one of the major money makers for college sports.

I think the increased advances in medical technology will lead to a greater understanding of brain trauma and damage done by sports like football. Soccer is going to be a victim of this as well, just not to the same extent. Constant pounding of ones head with a soccer ball can be devastating. There are plenty of cases of young soccer players who were forced to give up the sport because of recurring concussions

I think the biggest problem with college baseball is the best players don't play it. It's still a fun product, but more so than even pre-1 and done basketball and currently than football is that the best players, under the current system, go straight to the draft.

I don't think anyone can predict where soccer will go. College soccer sounds like something that would be big, but American MLS programs are mirroring European clubs with youth programs and youth clubs. And, obviously, other places in the world don't have "college" sports, and since Soccer is such a worldwide sport we appear to be copying the structure of the elite countries. That is not conducive to College Soccer becoming a huge deal.

because LSU taught the rest of the league how to win and make money in baseball.

Georgia won the SEC's first Baseball National Championship... a year before LSU did.

Alabama (2x), Auburn (2x), Mississippi State (4x), Ole Miss (4x), and Tennessee (1x) all experienced Omaha before LSU ever did.

... and this doesn't count the 4 expansion schools who all had early success in baseball. Missouri won the National Title in 1954. South Carolina made it to Omaha 5x before LSU ever did.... Arkansas and Texas A&M each went 2x to Omaha before LSU did.

That has been my thought - somebody is going to come up with a helmet that stops hits from rattling the head. In the world we live in now it just can't be that complex and unthinkable a product/prototype to come up with. Obviously it isn't "easy" or we'd have one, but with the advancements they've already made I'm pretty confident something will come out in the next 3-5 years that drastically reduces the violence on the head.

The question then, of course, will be if parents trust it.

I actually think the advanced helmets (and other padding) are a huge part of the problem.
Players feel safe using their noggins as battering rams.
There’s a reason you don’t see the same injuries in rugby.
