wait what's this green line?

The Green line is the "no slavery above this line...except in Missouri" line that was part of the Missouri compromise of 1820. It was repealed by the Kansas Nebraska act in 1854 which in turn lead to "Bloody Kansas"...

If any of you SEC people had gone to OU you would know this.

Missouri Compromise Line. Ky and Mo grandfathered in. Or the Royal Colonial Boundary Survey of 1665.

With personal courage, dedication, and technical innovation in the art and science of cadastral and geodetic survey practice, the survey of the Royal Colonial Boundary, located in what is now Cumberland Gap National Park, Kentucky, reached the Mississippi River in 1819.
"The boundary Charles II envisioned was one of the most grandiose in history. To decree an imaginary geographic straight line, 3,000 miles long, as a boundary across an unknown continent that he didn't even own was the height of royal pomposity."
- Lexington Herald-Leader July 28, 1990

The Royal Colonial Boundary of 1665 was decreed by England's King Charles II to demarcate his American colonies. It provided a survey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River along 36 degrees, 30 minutes north latitude. The boundary now serves to divide Virginia from North Carolina and Kentucky from Tennessee.

The survey, completed in five stages, was one of the first times a surveyed line was so long that the curve of the Earth had to be taken into consideration. It drew attention both to the importance and to the difficulty of cadastral surveying (to delimit and identify property lines) and geodetic surveying (in which the form and size of the earth are considered). It demonstrated some of the first attempts to locate an exact geographical position on the ground.

The 1665 line of 36 degrees, 30 minutes north latitude was recognized as the de facto dividing line between the North and the South in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Slavery was prohibited in new states north of this line.

orth of Lake Okeechobee, Florida is as Southern as any state. Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are NJ/NY.

The farther south you go, the further north you get.

I'm fully aware. But you don't get to pick and choose invididual counties/cities/towns/neighborhoods that fit your invididual criteria. if that was the case every state in America would be "southern" since there are little pockets in all that have their share of rednecks/hillbillies/whatever the local term may be. North florida is essentially just south GA/AL, but the overall state as a whole is not "the south". It just isn't.

If Miami-Dade and Tampa disqualify Florida, the ATL knocks out UGa. My state still has 2 GOP senators.

Southern MD (the part that drops down east of DC) is still Southern. Even saw rebel flags last time I was there.

The Eastern Shore of Maryland is very much in line with Southern culture as are counties north of Baltimore bordering Delaware. Baltimore and south to DC and most of western Maryland generally are not Southern in culture (albeit Maryland would likely have seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy had not Lincoln imprisoned the state legislature before they could vote). Check out one of the later verses of the state song "Maryland, My Maryland", which includes the line: "She spurns the Northern scum!"
