Doesn't know the rules of college football.
This isn't the NFL where the QB is protected at all times.
Once Murray threw the INT...he is a defender and isn't protected as a defenseless player.
In the Elston case, hitting a WR who is catching the ball is considered hitting a defenseless player. And carries the rule with it that the defender can not hit any part of his helmet to the helmet of the WR. Any part.
And since Murray wasn't a defenseless player in the Dial hit, Dial IS allowed to hit any part of his helmet to Murray's EXCEPT the crown of the helmet. And Dial didn't use the crown of his helmet, so......CLEAN HIT. NO PENALTY.

A clean, legal play that was unnecessary

Maybe we could start a foundation like Tide for Toomers - we'll donate funds to your favorite charity. Will you love us then?
Maybe you could just remain forgotten then, like now, no one would care.

It was kind of a cheap shot and unnecessary, but it was legal and Murray needs to remember that he is now on defense. I hope Bama plays hard like that against ND.
Roll Damn Tide.
Roll Damn Tide.

I agree, Trey. I don't like when commissioners decide to ignore the actual rules on on-the-field play, and interpret things his own way and punish players. But that's within his power.
I also hate the way the NCAA punishes programs for things completely unrelated to football, according to their own sense of ethics and politics. The NCAA should govern athletics - no more, no less.

Dial is getting the Nick Fairley treatment.

I mean I agree crying about makes you look like a sore loser but trying to deny the illegality of that hit just makes you look like a moron, which of course most of you are so it's really not a surprise.
I HATE the recent trend where defenders can not hit receivers and quarterbacks but there is never a scenario where it's legal to put the crown of your helmet into someone's earhole.

Clearly not helmet to helmet. He hits him with his forearm across the chest.

Actually it's not a "legal" hit anymore. It's been a point of emphasis to not allow shots on the QB after INTs by the NCAA. It's the whole defenseless player rule. Unless he's actively involved in attempting to make a play (not just jogging in the direction of the play) no player can be hit from the blind side. Same rule in the NFL after the Saints knocked the shite out of Kurt Warner in the playoffs. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get suspended for it. And for the record I personally think it's just part of the game.

It was a vicious hit and could have been called but Dial didn't launch and didn't lead with his head.

Look at the gif above. This is not opinion, it is a fact - he did NOT hit Murray with the crown of his helmet. He hit with his shoulder and the SIDE of his helmet.
It is physically impossible to "lead with your helmet" while facing away from the guy you're tackling. You just don't seem to understand what the rule is trying to eliminate.

The Elston hit was H2H on a defenseless player -> illegal hit
The Dial hit was H2H but not a defenseless player -> legal hit
Even though Elston's hit was illegal, I didn't think he should've been suspended. I certainly don't think the SEC should be suspending players for legal hits like the one on Murray. No one should support that precedent being set.
If you think the rules should be changed to make QBs "defenseless players" after a turnover, fine, but that's not the way the rules are written in college football.
