Not true

What's not true? The Bowl Coalition was established in 1992 to attempt to get #1 and #2 on the same field together in the post-season. The only reason why the Coalition and the subsequent Bowl Alliance failed is because the Rose Bowl initially refused to participate, thus denying Penn State a shot at the national championship in 1994 and Arizona State a shot at the national championship in 1996.

But from 1992-1997, you had #1 and #2 square off in the following post-season bowl games:

1993 Sugar Bowl: #1 Miami vs. #2 Alabama
1994 Orange Bowl: #1 Florida State vs. #2 Nebraska
1996 Fiesta Bowl: #1 Nebraska vs. #2 Florida

Because the Rose Bowl refused to participate, we were deprived of the following match-ups:

1994-95 #1 Nebraska vs. #2 Penn State
1996-97 #1 Florida State vs. #2 Arizona State
1997-98 #1 Michigan vs. #2 Nebraska

Though it must be noted that 1996 Arizona State was upset in the Rose Bowl at the hands of Ohio State, allowing Florida to upset top ranked Florida State in the Sugar Bowl re-match.

But going by the OP's criteria, Alabama has national championships in the following years:

1978
1992
2009
2011
2012
2015

That's still more than anyone when using the #1 vs. #2 criteria. Especially in the SEC.

So in the end, national championship numbers for the SEC schools look like this:

Alabama - 6 (1978, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015)
LSU - 2 (2003, 2007)
Florida - 2 (2006, 2008)
Auburn - 1 (2010)
Tennessee - 1 (1998)

And everyone else has 0.

In the post-season? Only a handful. 1963 Rose Bowl - #1 USC vs. #2 Wisconsin 1964 Cotton Bowl - #1 Texas vs. #2 Navy 1969 Rose Bowl - #1 USC vs. #2 Ohio State 1972 Orange Bowl - #1 Nebraska vs. #2 Alabama 1979 Sugar Bowl - #1 Penn State vs. #2 Alabama 1983 Sugar Bowl - #1 Georgia vs. #2 Penn State 1987 Fiesta Bowl - #1 Miami vs. #2 Penn State

And the polls had already been decided in 63 and 64.
The first title game was the Jan 66 Orange between Bama and Nebraska (which was actually 3 vs 4). The AP waited until after the bowls and #1 Sparty and #2 Arky had lost earlier.

The Coalition sucked because the bowl tie-ins were still in place for the SEC/B8/B10/SWC/PAC.

I wonder why the AP switched back in 66 and 67 before permanently waiting until after the bowls in 68.

We have 4. Only one was not 1 vs 2. That was in 1958. That would be 1/4. Don't be sad, math is hard.

2019 final CFP/AP/Coaches rankings
2. Ohio State
3. Clemson
4. Oklahoma

"Math is hard" lol

So if 1 and 2 aren’t in it, do we just cancel the national championship game?

LSU fans are so dumb

I have my conspiracy theory but I'm sure the answer is complicated.

This past year's national championship game was #1 LSU vs. #3 Clemson.

Was this a playoff game and was it after the BCS?

Bad info because these 2 played each other in 1998. So FSU should have 3.

I don't count national championships before the BCS unless it was 1 vs 2. BCS was a true 1 vs 2 before that the two best teams rarely played for the National Championship. Here is a question. How many times did 1 vs 2 play for the title before the BCS? If your team was not part of a 1 vs 2 for the title that Championship is irrelevant. Yes, a1abama this is directed to your programs 28 national titles. Geaux Tigers!!

So, you don't count the 1958 NC title for LSU?
The 2003 Championship that LSU won was between #2 and #3.
And the rankings going into the playoffs last year had LSU #1 and Ohio State #2...Clemson was #4.

So, you are wanting to eliminate the 1958, 2003 and 2019 NCs of LSU?

If you insist we will not count three of LSUs NCs.

You don't realize that the playoff system does not pit #1 vs. #2 (2019 #1 was LSU and Clemson was #4) and the 2003 NC game that LSU won was not #1 vs #2, and of course the 1958 game LSU won was not #1 vs #2, so you effectively eliminated 3 LSU NC's.

Just because you say it in back to back posts, doesn't make it true. If Clemson was the 4 seed they would've played in the semifinals. But congrats on making yourself look as bright as the OP.

Doesn't matter. It wasn't #1 vs. #2. Alabama's national championship in 2017 no longer counts either because we played #3 while ranked #4.
