If your goal as a program is to win a championship, then it should make no damn difference how many games you play.
Your goal is to win EVERY game. No matter the competition. No matter the difficulty.
Just win baby.

True, it’d probably be a bigger deal for the #2 in the ACC and Big12, if you’re 10-2 GT sitting at #11, do you really want to risk losing a 12-0 #4 FSU (not this year obviously just a future scenario) and risk falling to 10-3 and being left out?

And you haven’t even mentioned the increased chance of injuries when top teams are going all out like they do in the SECCG.
Hell, give me the extra week to rest, recover and game plan for the playoff.

SEC Championship…why bother? Posted by Bamafig8/16/24 at 11:16 am It’s run its course and should be retired. Here’s my list of pros/cons. Pros -you get to hang a banner and get gaudy rings -you get a 1st round bye in Playoffs (see below) Cons -you aren’t getting a bye because you are playing the extra game. You will still have to play 16 games. -the loser has to play 17 games IF the loss from the additional game doesn’t knock them out -combined with the 12 team PO, you increase the chances of two teams playing three times in one year. It was fun while it lasted. Unfortunately, I can foresee teams, safely in the PO, resting starters. We all love the last week of the NFL season when the playoffs are already decided, don’t we?

Swap to a 9 game sec schedule and drop the championship game. There’s no point anymore other than money.

The SECCG should be eliminated...but money says no.

When Alabama misses the playoffs after losing in Atlanta the SEC will go back to the old days of co-champs. No more SECCG.

The SECCG needs to be dumped. These kids play enough games. With the playoffs expanded to 12 games, there really is no need for this.

Maybe what they'll do is increase to 16 teams and then give byes to all eight participants in the P4 championship games. That would solve a few of the problems we're seeing right now.
Of course, that adds a couple more new problems.

Or just use the SECCG to play your bench. Put in your scrubs or have a JV game (all freshman) for the SECCG, lol.

That first rd bye and a home game are way better than traveling to Penn State in late December or January

That's not the way it works. There are no home games after the first round.
And as far as the 'bye', you're playing in the SECCG instead.

I
I understand what you're saying. It might be more advantageous to miss out on the SECCG if you know you'll be seated 5-8 than to lose that game and play both that and the first round game.

The SECCG is a money maker for the conference and for tv execs. Also coaches often have it in their clause that they get a bonus for winning.
Much like the NFL, we’ll start seeing monetary incentives for players to compete and win the conference championship game. NIL will build a bonus system into their funds to reward players for both playing and then winning the game.
Such is the American way, I guess. No one wants to do anything for the honor and integrity of anything. But that’s how it goes.

Order of Priority
1. Get to Playoff
2. Win first game
3. Get homefield game
4. Get first round bye
5. Get first round away game
6. Win SECCG
7. Lose SECCG but still in playoffs
8. Lose SECCG and get knocked out of playoffs (will get best bowl probably)

And considering that LOSING in Atlanta could very possibly, in many cases, knock you out of the playoffs, it just seems to me that going to Atlanta is something many SEC playoff hopefuls would rather avoid.
The reward of the bye outweighs the risk of being left out, IMO.
Both SECCG teams will make the playoffs far more often than not.

If an SEC team is in the top ten or so, I don't see any upside to making Atlanta over going straight to the first round of the playoffs.
How about win the SEC and get that first round bye?

The SECCG is Dec 7th
Then the first home round is Dec 20th
Then Jan 1st.
Playing on the 20th AT HOME and then having 10 days to rest is a beautiful thing. While the 1st seed byes are sitting home for almost a month playing ncaa 2025.
