I have serious reservations that the Death Penalty will ever be used again.
You may be right. Kentucky's basketball program qualified for it in '89, according to the NCAA's investigating committee, but then that committee chickened out and let them continue playing.

Not only did it kill SMU, but it became a zombie for the next 15 years.
When Kentucky was given the death penalty in basketball in '53, they went right on back to winning. It's SMU's own fault that they took so long to recover.

trying to compare a program in the 50s to one 40+ years later is extremely naive. Not even comparable.

Not really a fair comparison. It takes a lot longer to build up a football roster than a basketball roster

not just that. the nature of college athletics as a whole are completely different now.

How much would a UNC Death Penalty for academic fraud affect the ACC?
Unless you have Virginia, Clemson, Florida State, and everyone else not named Wake Forest on probation, AND the rest of the ACC somehow miraculously moves their campuses to North Carolina, the ACC will NOT go the way of the SWC.

On a side note: In your opinion, what punishment does UNC deserve for admitting to egregious academic fraud?
Death penalty. But you won't ever see the NCAA shut down a major program. You have to be some small D3 no-name school for that to happen.

UNC receiving a death penalty would be like Texas getting it. UNC runs everything about that conference, and it would severely hurt the ACC. But no, the ACC would not collapse because there are still other strong programs (unless FSU and Miami took it as their chance to join the B12). The NCAA is only going to slap UNC on the wrist though

why have I never thought of UNC as some great superpower like Texas, Bama or Ohio State?

They basically control the ACC...along with UVA.

One could make the argument that UVA is actually calling the shots. Regardless, those two are the main schools holding the conference together.

unc is a much, much bigger power than SMU ever was-- UNC is a national team like Florida or Bama, SMU was just a regional power
You are just flat out wrong with that one. SMU was a national player. They may not have won huge, but they had the swag and the SWC was bigger in CFB than the ACC has ever been.
You have tpo remember SMU reach was just not in conference but the cheating they were doing was all the way up to the Governor.

How is a non-powerhouse school like UVA responsible for holding together the second strongest conference in the country?

Money, academic prestige, political influence, and athletic excellence in basically every sport but football. They also are tied to the DC, Richmond, and Hampton Roads markets.

UNC sells basketball tickets.
Basketball is how the NCAA makes its money.
Study it out.

JMO SMU failed to return to their previous form because:
1. their conference fell apart. When they went to the WAC nobody cared.
2. the money completely dried up
3. fans simply stopped supporting the team.
When you buy your players, the inability to buy them anymore tends to destroy your recruiting. Look back at their long term records against their rivals, they weren't very good for a long time, had a burst of excellence and then returned to form at an even lesser level.

UNC is facing the same kind of punishment. What they did is as bad if not worse than SMU or any other school the NCAA has punished before.
Not even close

The WAC was stupid in adding schools. They had the perfect conference for those schools, but got greedy and decided to be like the Big East before the Big East. SMU should have went indy until the war chest was back. Once Ford gave the cash, SMU became a player again.

The Death Penalty talk is ridiculous.
First, UNC has already been sanctioned by the NCAA (1 year bowl probation and loss of scholarships for 3 years). We are currently serving under these sanctions.
The University continues to investigate issues within the African Studies Department. These are academic issues and not NCAA (directly) related.
After Butch Davis was fired, the University has tightened significantly the academic standards for football players. UNC has always had a very good graduation rate for its athletes. No question Davis' staff cut corners and we deserve our punishment.
UNC is definitely the main power and driving force of the ACC. Duke is a main player as well. UVA is probably 3rd in conference influence. The "academic" three schools definitely listened to the football schools (FSU, Clemson, VT, Miami) in agreeing to add Louisville to the conference.
All talk of the ACC collapsing is old news given each school has now granted their licensing rights to the ACC for a ten year period.
