Before conference championship games whoever was #1 in the standings was champion, if it was tied there were co-champions.
With mega-conferences this is gonna get retarded.
This year 4 teams finished tied at 7-1 for example and under the old rules you would have had a 4 way tie for champion.

Agree, but if the playoffs expand to 16 or 24 teams, the playoffs will have to start almost as soon as the regular season is over. Championship games will have to go away.

You might want to re-acquaint yourself with the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

You do realize that SEC Championships were awarded before the SECCG (1992), don't you?

What’s that got to with it?

Used to just let everyone at the top claim it if the best record was the same among two or more schools. Some tried to claim a "regular season" championship this year. Who knows?

Having the SECCG didn't stop Ole Piss from hanging banners

There are 136 D1 FBS teams all competing for the same championship. If you leave any of them out of the formula for making the field, they will sue under Sherman Anti-Trust Act. I'm pretty sure they did back in the 90s when the BCS was being formed.

What an ironic post by OP considering OM has a banner hanging declaring themselves 2003 SEC West Champions. Ole Miss did not play in the SECCG that year because they lost to LSU, who actually played in the SECCG. You guys are hilarious.

everyone hangs a banner

The SEC has eliminated divisions and reduced the CG to a beauty contest.
This year’s CG literally somehow had two teams that had played each other in season over teams that hadn’t played each other.
So much for “settling it on the field”.

Are you guys gonna hang an SEC regular season championship banner this year?

I mean you asking about the same school that hung a 2003 west division championship banner in their stadium despite losing to the real champs on their own field .

If it was me we call the whole thing the "Southern Conference" and we split it back into 2 divisions named the SEC and the SWC. Align them accordingly. Add teams if needed to fill out 10 per division (throw these clowns a bone). You play your entire division. The winner gets a trophy. Championship game is played in Atlanta or the Cotton Bowl based on which division winner has the higher CFP ranking.
Id probably make the entire power 4/5 whatever do this sort of thing. Megaconferences, but with divisions within aligned to historical conferences.
Also everyone within a sniff of the playoff has a cross division game CC weekend. For some it is a play in. For some it is seeding. Only the actual champ gets a bye for the playoff...no more being rewarded for not making the game. All playoff games are at the stadium of the higher ranked team until the championship game. Championship game is in the traditional bowl of the highest ranked teams conference (rose, sugar, etc )...which is played New Years Day as God intended.
End of rant
