I agree, South Carolina doesn't match Florida when it come to the pool of football talent, but not many states do. You would just think with him being Steve Spurrier, he could dip into a surrounding state and steal an elite QB or even coach an average one up. Just look at past schools with a mediocre football past. NC State managed to land Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson, Kentucky had Andre Woodson. A great QB is really all South Carolina has been missing since Spurrier got there. I am beginning to think at Florida Spurrier was just great at stacking talent and calling plays and not so much the QB guru people believe him to be.

Regardless, right now Spurrier is in the Top 2 or 3 all time.
What he did at Florida was impressive and, in some ways more impressive than Bryant.
Saban is obviously in the conversation and you could argue that he is the best.
Spurrier dealt with more parity in CFB than Bear did and Saban has done it with even more parity (less schollies etc).
Spurrier is top notch.
And no, Meyer is not in the conversation. Take away Harvin and Tebow and he is shite.

I really like Spurrier, he is top 5 already in my opinion and has done great job for you guys. He has his flaws like any other coach. When he was at UF with all those studs and a QB running his system, third and sixteen was like third and short for the rest of us.

That's why I thought I'd get some flack on previous post. That works in CFB where you can outrun or out muscle most other teams but not in NFL, where the playing field is pretty level. Personally I think he has become a better HC at SCar. He recruits well at a place that is hard to recruit, makes good staff hires, and is keeping the program on the same page...to me the 3 primary functions of an HC.

Meyer is the one HC I actually dislike, but he's won every where he's been.

I agree. There is no question he is doing things differently at South Carolina. He obviously learned a thing or two during his stint in the NFL. People are trying to separate Spurrier and Saban, yet they are more similar than some people want to realize.

No doubt.
Florida had never won an SEC title prior to his arrival and they dominated the 90s. That run alone makes him one of the greats, but making two programs relevant on the national scale in this conference would be history.

Granted the lack of scholarship limitations helped Bryant, but he had to build Bama up to the level where he was able to take advantage of that. It's not like Bama was at a power house level when Bryant took over. Plus it's not like Spurrier was hurting for talent at UF. Spurrier was sitting on a hotbed for recuiting.

historically, the 4 schools in question are LSU, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina.
Bama's been elite.
LSU had long stretches of being very good.
Florida had occasional periods of being good.
South Carolina was an also-ran.
Without Saban, Alabama and LSU might still have revived, although neither likely to the level that they are.
Without Spurrier, Florida might occasionally contend, but are nowhere near being the elite program he built them into, and South Carolina would continue to be a 6 win team at best.
So for career impact, Spurrier wins this in a runaway, objectively speaking.

I think you are wrong on this. The population boom in Florida during the 70s & 80s had elevated the recruiting grounds in that state to the point where any good coach could turn that program into a SEC contender. Spurrier ended up at UF at just the right time to capitalize on the recruiting in that state.

Bear Bryant used to always refer to Florida as a "sleeping giant". Spurrier awakened it.
