If Saban had started 5-7, 7-6, 9-4, and 9-4, would Bama fans had kept him?

Let's see if the hindsight Bama fans can answer a simple question:

Would you guys had kept Saban if he started out 5-7, 7-6, 9-4, and 9-4?

It's a simple question. Don't kill the OP. Thanks.

Saban with his track record at LSU? Yes, probably would have kept him for a 5th year. He would have been on the hot seat though.

It also would matter how he was performing against Auburn/LSU/Tennessee. If he was losing all those games I'm not sure he'd make it, especially on the heels of Shula's record against them.

However, if year 5 started and it was clear we were no better than we were in year 2 then I think things were turn ugly pretty quickly.

You guys rid of Mike Shula 2 years after he went 10-2 and won the Cotton Bowl...

Those sanctions didn't come til later... so can't blame the cheating.

No, we fired Mike Shula after he finished 6-6, went 0-4 vs Auburn, 0-4 vs LSU, and 1-3 vs Tennessee. He had exactly one season in which he finished better than .500, and even then he couldn’t beat Auburn or LSU.

What? Sanctions were handed down in February of 2002, which included 5 years probation, a 2 year bowl ban, and severe scholarship restrictions. Shula wasn’t hired until 2003.

No, because a great coach wouldn't have that type of record at Alabama. Fran, Shula, and Dubose each had 10 win seasons within their first three seasons.

If Saban had failed to achieve one 10 win season in his first four years, it would've been a clear sign of a brain tumor, and we would have done the right thing by letting him go to receive appropriate medical care.

I think if Saban would have had a 9 win average over his first 5 years, the Bama people would be calling for his head and probably get him to resign, and then they would move on to the next sacrificial lamb.

Mal Moore lucked out on his timing to get Saban.

You could replace Saban with any coach and this statement would be close to true regardless. There are variables to consider (record against AU & UT), but there is no reason at a place like Bama - with all the resources a coach could need and the history to prove that ANY coach can win 10 games at least once - for a legit great coach to not average at least 9 wins at Bama.

Mal knee better than to come back to town without Saban. He’d have just had to have just live out his life in South Beach.

They may have kept him but he would have had similar to seasons that the rest of the upper SEC had.

Alabama would not have had the success they had in recruiting if that was results in his first 4 seasons.
That alone is what perpetuated their continued success.

Saban has basically been coaching the unanimous #1 recruiting class in the country since yr #3. It's not that all 5 star recruits are guarantees, but they are statistically more likely to be productive.

In our case, his record was a double edged sword for us. Not only did he recruit really well and build Alabama's roster, but MANY of those 4 and 5 star recruits were Louisiana boys that could and should have been Tigers.

Something AU fans are struggling with. Can we find someone better than Gus? There is exactly one Saban in the country. You let Urban walk. If not careful, you turn into UT.

I think Auburn absolutely can (and should) do better than Gus. Coach Dye wanted you to hire Kirby. You should have listened to him.

Kirby was destined for Georgia, unfortunately. He waited until that job opened up while learning from the devil. Good on him. He was probably contacted by Auburn for all we know in their hiring search. He was the target for a lot of teams and turned them down.

I would stay away from hiring the ‘Guru’ types on Offesnse. Get a guy that knows Defense.

How would Gator fans feel if McElwain had won the East his first two seasons and had an offense consistently ranked in the 100's?

TBD?
